US Defeats Honduras 1-0 in Men's Soccer

Pre-game: Beasley’s absence forces US lineup changes

SANDY -- U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has made a few key changes in the midfield and backfield for Tuesday night’s World Cup qualifier against Honduras in Utah.

DeMarcus Beasley will miss the match while serving a one-game suspension because of yellow card accumulation. Beasley had started the previous six matches at left back and Klinsmann has put German-born Fabian Johnson in Beasley’s spot.

Graham Zusi and Jermaine Jones both return to the midfield after sitting out a 2-0 victory over Panama last week. Zusi sat out because of yellow card accumulation. Jones was cleared to play after being held out when he suffered a mild concussion in a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on June 7.

Lolo Jones’ attempt at humor backfires

DES MOINES, Iowa —Lolo Jones’ attempt at humor in a video that’s gone viral received a chilly reception from some members of the bobsledding community.

Like that, the U.S. hurdler who also recently picked up bobsled finds herself under scrutiny again.

Jones posted a Vine video in which she pokes fun at a check she received for $741.84 as prize money from the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. In the spoof, she picks up the phone and says, “I’m going to be a little bit late on my rent.”

Lakers’ Rich will join Snow hoops in 2015

Snow College men’s basketball coach Rob Nielson has announced that Mason Rich, a 2013 graduate of Bonneville High School, has verbally committed to play for the Badgers.

Rich will be leaving in July for a two-year LDS Church mission to Peru, and has committed to join the Badgers in the fall of 2015.

“I’m stoked,” said Rich, “Going on a mission and then coming back to play for Snow feels right. I like the coaches at Snow and think it will be a really good fit.”

In his senior season at Bonneville, Rich averaged 14.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Timmi Ward

Young Utah stars Ward, Wright, Bingham lead way at CNFR

CASPER, Wyo. — After all the saddles and buckles had been handed out Saturday to the various team and individual winners at the College National Finals Rodeo, Idaho State’s Kimberlyn Fehringer-Fitch and College of Southern Idaho’s Timmi Ward stepped to the award stand one more time and posed for photos.

Based on their showing at the just-completed CNFR, the two freshmen might want to get used to it.

Fehringer-Fitch won the breakaway roping title with a four-run time of 9.7 seconds — the fastest at the CNFR since Central Wyoming College’s Daysha Hulme posted a 9.6 in 2004.

American moment: U.S. team hopes to get lift from sold out Rio Tinto

For a night, Rio Tinto Stadium will become ground zero for the United States Men’s National Team and its hopes of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

And Utah soccer fans have been quick to embrace both the team’s presence and the importance of the match.

When tickets for tonight’s match (7 p.m., ESPN) initially went on sale to the public in March, the match sold out in 24 hours, and U.S. Soccer added 200 tickets for release on Saturday, selling those out in an hour.

Shabazz pays Jazz a quick visit

SALT LAKE CITY —Shabazz Muhammad showed up for a predraft workout for the Utah Jazz on Monday, but he never broke a sweat. The former UCLA shooting guard was sidelined with a left ankle injury and wore a walking boot while 10 other candidates went through drills at the Zions Bank Basketball Center.

“Some guys are hurt and just cancel (the workout),” Muhammad said. “I just wanted to come here and show my face and meet the coaching staff, even though I got to meet with them briefly (during last month’s combine) in Chicago.”

Muhammad, 20, has entered the NBA draft after one season at UCLA, where he averaged 17.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Once considered to be a potential No. 1 overall pick coming out Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman High School, his draft stock has taken a hit thanks in part to some off-the-court issues at UCLA.

Versatile Fabian Johnson helping U.S. squad

SANDY — Nothing defines Fabian Johnson better than versatility.

It is one reason why the German-American was such a coveted addition to the U.S. national team in 2011. Johnson can shift between midfield and left back with ease. No matter where he plays on the field, he takes to the position like it is his natural one.

“It’s not tough,” Johnson said. “It’s just a different role that I have to play. I’ve played it a lot of times, so it won’t make any difference to the team or to me.”
