Gentle Jayhawk wins national honor

OGDEN -- Each year the National Federation of State High School Associations names a single coach as girls soccer National Coach of the Year.

For 2011, that coach was St. Joseph Catholic High School's own Alexis (Alex) Salvo.

"I really don't want to make this award about me," Salvo said. "I really feel this award belongs to the whole school."

Utah drill team state titles up for grabs

The best drill teams in regions 1, 5, 6, 11 and 17 will take aim at state championship titles this weekend at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

The 5-A and 4-A championships will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday, the 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams take to the floor from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Defending 4-A champion Bountiful will face strong challenges from 2011 runner-up Bonneville, as well as Mountain Crest, Box Elder, Sky View and Logan from Region 5, as well as Clearfield out of Region 6.

Prep basketball: Royals no match for Lakers' stingy defense

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The matchup of the Royals' state 4-A leading offense (56.20 points per game) versus a Bonneville defense allowing just 36.47 ppg -- No. 2 in the 4-A ranks by only .04 -- was a no-contest.

Despite a venue change Thursday, the league-leading Lakers spanked Roy High 54-22 to remain undefeated at Region 5's midpoint.

If Bonneville (13-3 overall, 5-0 league) is to capture its first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season, it will have to do it away from home. The Lakers, who swept their seventh consecutive victory and are 8-2 spanning their last 10 games, play four of their final five on the road.

OGDEN -- St. Joseph sophomore center Elizabeth Tomon notched 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Jayhawks cruised to a 57-36 win over Layton Christian Academy, taking sole possession of Region 17's top spot on Tuesday night.

Tomon's double-double at Father Neale Herrlich Gymnasium was complimented by 28 combined points from senior guards Katie Berry and Katie Panushka.

Prep girls basketball: Lancers wallop Warriors

LAYTON -- Non-league wins do not get you into the state girls basketball tournament.

After going undefeated during the preseason, the Lancers opened Region 1 play Tuesday against a team they hadn't beaten since a sweep in the 2006-07 season.

Limiting Weber High to a season-low point total, Layton snapped an eight-game skid versus the Warriors with a wire-to-wire 46-27 victory.

Prep basketball: Darts get the job done in OT

KAYSVILLE -- Twelve days ago, Tyson Denney was carried off the court in Orem with a badly sprained left ankle.

On Thursday evening, the Darts could have carried him off the court in celebration after his performance against Judge Memorial High School.

Denney, a 6-foot-2 senior forward and two-year starter for Davis, displayed both grit and cool experience as he splashed home six free throws in overtime to close out a come from behind 51-47 victory over the Bulldogs.

Warriors nip Lakers in overtime thriller

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Cross-county rivals Weber and Bonneville squared off in non-league girls basketball action, and it took overtime to sneak north with a 40-37 victory on Thursday night.

The Lakers battled back to forge overtime with a big fourth period, but went scoreless in the extra period. The Warriors, meanwhile, improved to 6-0 on the young season.

Girls basketball: Berry helps St. Joseph roll over Altamont

ALTAMONT -- The Jayhawks rocked the Long Horns with a 24-9 run in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 59-33 win.

Katie Berry led the way with 21 points, while teammate Katie Panushka added 15 to help seal the 26-point victory.

Prep basketball: Austin's Lions edge host Jayhawks in overtime

OGDEN -- The Jayhawks are getting plenty of practice at close games.

Last week, St. Joseph's boys basketball squad pulled out a two-point win over Dugway. On Wednesday, the Jayhawks dropped a 56-51 overtime battle to Rowland Hall-St. Mark's on their home court.

Prep volleyball: Jayhawks narrowly miss 1-A title game

OREM -- Bend your thumb and index finger until they're nearly touching. That's how close to the state 1-A volleyball championship game the St. Joseph Jayhawks got on Saturday. Instead, they were knocked out of the semifinals in five games by perennial power Monticello at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center.

After narrowly winning Game 1, 25-22, the Jayhawks were poised to capture Game 2 as well, leading 24-21 and needing only a single point to win the game. But the Buckaroos mounted a furious comeback, scoring four straight points to take a one-point lead. The Jayhawks then tied it at 25-25, but Monticello closed it out by scoring the next two points to win 27-25.

Prep volleyball: Jayhawks, Eagles advance to 1-A semis

OREM -- Both the expected and unexpected occurred on Friday at the 1-A state volleyball tournament at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center.

Highly favored St. Joseph, the Region 17 champs, cruised through to the semifinal round with straight-set wins over Piute and Tabiona. Nothing shocking there.

Prep notes: Trojans, Jayhawks primed for state

A couple of 20-plus win teams will lead the charge at this weekend's state 3-A and 1-A volleyball tournaments on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Utah Valley University's volleyball arena.

Morgan -- with a glossy 22-5 record and recent wins over Lone Peak, Skyline and Snow Canyon, will jump into 3-A tournament action Thursday afternoon against Carbon.

Liz Wiscombe's squad appears healthy, focused on repeating their 2010 title and tournament tough for the two-day event.

Prep soccer: Jayhawk title push falls short

SANDY -- Sometimes in soccer, you just need a little luck.

Unfortunately for the St. Joseph girls soccer team, luck wasn't in the cards as they fell 1-0 to Waterford in the state 2-A championship on Saturday afternoon.

"I'm proud of these girls," St. Joseph coach Alex Salvo said. "They played their hearts out but today we were very unlucky."
