CENTERVILLE -- A suspect in a Centerville bank robbery was arrested Monday night after a SWAT unit surrounded his Bountiful home.
Police have identified their suspect as William B. Walstrand, 33. He is currently being held in the Davis County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person.
Police and a Davis County SWAT team surrounded the home on Spring Creek Drive just hours after the alleged robbery. They initially tried to use a bullhorn to communicate with Walstrand and get him to come outside, but they were unsuccessful.
Centerville officers also requested help from the FBI and Bountiful police in the operation.
Some time later, a 12-year-old boy came to the door and told officers Walstrand was possibly asleep. The SWAT team took the boy to safety and used tear gas to bust into the home, where they found Walstrand and arrested him.
Walstrand is suspected of robbing the Chase bank at 315 N. Market St. in Centerville around 3:43 p.m. on Monday. Police say he was dressed in camouflage clothing and told the teller "this is a robbery" before walking out with an unspecified amount of cash. He reportedly dropped a black handgun as he walked out of the bank, then picked it back up before fleeing in his pickup truck.
An employee at Dollar Cuts close by noticed a man who matched the description of the bank robber get into a black Dodge pickup truck. Prior to the robbery, Centerville police were trying to locate a reckless driver in a black pickup who was also possibly impaired. Officers had a license plate number, but it was one digit off the actual registration of the vehicle.
Police were still able to find a possible match on the truck and traced it to Walstrand's Bountiful home. Authorities say they have recovered the gun and other items in the home that were believed to have been used in the robbery.
