Law enforcement officers from a number of different agencies, including the Utah Highway Patrol, Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Hurricane Police Department and the Washington City Police Department, keep their weapons trained on a maroon colored Scion, Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at mile marker 17 near Hurricane, Utah. Inside the vehicle, a man was holding his two sons at gunpoint as the car sits on it's rims in the middle of the southbound lane of Interstate 15 after having it's tires blown out by spikes during a chase with law enforcement officers. Ogden Police Officer Travis Copier, seen here last week, survived a hammer attack to the face and was nearly shot in the head during a SWAT standoff — both within three months of each other. He hasn’t let the facial injury from the hammer or the threat of danger keep him from doing what he loves. In fact, he’s currently assigned to the Crime Reduction Unit, which patrols Ogden’s inner city. (MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner)

Ogden officer still aims to be police chief -- even after two recent close calls

OGDEN -- He still has a dent in his face from his March encounter with a drunken gangster swinging a hammer. And the dent almost caught a bullet in June when Travis Copier was part of a SWAT team breaking up a hostage situation.

In both cases, Copier is the listed victim for charges of first-degree felony attempted murder.

Public defender of suspect in Ogden standoff needs county funds for expert witnesses

OGDEN -- Jason Valdez's public defender will be hiring an expert, possibly more than one, as part of the defense for charges of kidnapping and attempted murder -- which revisits the potential conflict of interest in Weber County of having prosecutors influence the funding of defense attorneys.

Valdez is charged in the 16-hour SWAT standoff that began June 18 in an Ogden motel, an event Valdez posted about on his Facebook page throughout.

Standoff hostage's prosecution complicates Valdez's case

OGDEN -- Proceedings against an Ogden man who posted Facebook updates about his standoff with SWAT officers ground to a halt after his alleged hostage pleaded guilty to drug charges.

Valdez had been recovering in McKay-Dee Hospital since June 19, when the standoff ended with him shooting himself in the chest as police barged into the Western Colony Inn motel room. He had barricaded himself in there with a hostage for 16 hours after officers tried to serve him a drug-related warrant.

Suspect in weekend Pa. shootings killed by SWAT team

PHILADELPHIA -- A man who shot five people in Montgomery County, Pa., Saturday night was killed by police late Monday morning as the house he was in was surrounded by police SWAT teams.

At a press conference, Delaware County District Attorney Mike Green and Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said the suspect died in the basement. Ferman said the suspect, Mark Geisenheyner, 51, was killed by police.

Authorities said Geisenheyner had a long criminal history in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York. Some of the crimes were related to insurance fraud.

Cousin: 'Ugly' Facebook responses to standoff suspect add to tragedy

OGDEN -- When Jason Valdez posted seven status updates on his Facebook page about his involvement in a standoff with the Ogden Police Department last weekend, he intended to inform just his 165 friends. But because of his liberal privacy settings, anyone could view his page and leave comments -- which resulted in tens of thousands of comments, mostly condemning the man who ended the standoff by shooting himself in the chest.
