STDs increased in Utah in 2012

SALT LAKE CITY — Health officials say cases of sexually-transmitted diseases have increased in Utah, and they’re trying to spread the message that condoms are the best way to stop it.

Sex diseases cost $16 billion a year to treat

SAN FRANCISCO — Sexually transmitted diseases cost $16 billion each year to treat in the United States, with 19.7 million infections diagnosed annually, the nation’s health agency found.

People ages 15 to 24 account for half of the annual cases, according to reports released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are about 110 million total infections among U.S. men and women of all ages, the agency said, with the most common infection human papillomavirus, a virus linked to cancer.

Davis Health Department explains rise in disease reports

CLEARFIELD — Health screenings for incoming Davis County Jail inmates, a national pertussis outbreak and the steady climb of sexually transmitted diseases significantly raised the number of communicable disease cases reported in Davis County in 2012.

Communicable disease on the rise in Davis County

CLEARFIELD -- With chlamydia at the top of the list, sexually transmitted diseases continue to push the reported number of communicable diseases upward in Davis County.

That was the news shared with the Davis County Board of Health, ironically on Valentine's Day.

In 2011, the health department received 1,369 disease reports, up 9 percent from the 2010 report of 1,256 cases, said Brian Hatch, director of the county health department's communicable disease and epidemiology division.

Experts: Cover contraceptives more

WASHINGTON -- An independent panel of doctors and health experts Tuesday recommended that health plans cover contraceptives for women without co-pays, setting the stage for another debate over the effect of the healthcare overhaul President Barack Obama signed last year.

Medicare could cover tests for soaring STD rate in senior citizens

Taxpayers could soon be picking up the tab for new sexually transmitted disease screenings for seniors, as well as other Medicare recipients.

More than a decade after Viagra and its ilk began helping boomers and seniors to enjoy conjugal relations more frequently, sexually transmitted disease rates are up dramatically in the over-40 age bracket.

And while wisdom is supposed to come with age, studies have also shown that men over 50 -- regardless of marital status -- are six times less likely to use a condom than men in their 20s, partly because, by that age, they (and their partner) are less worried about pregnancy.
