A recent suicide attempt by train was a stark reminder to transit officials, police and emergency responders of how helpless they are when people decide to put themselves in the path of an oncoming train.
On Aug. 30, a 44-year-old woman was struck by a FrontRunner train near the 2300 North rail crossing in Sunset. The women, who survived after receiving only a glancing blow from the train, told paramedics she was trying to commit suicide.
Since FrontRunner began service in Weber and Davis counties in 2008, there have been at least five suicides or suicide attempts on Utah Transit Authority tracks.
