The 2011 Sundance Film Festival has announced its competition films, on a wide variety of themes and starring unknown actors and a few big names.
Among the celebrities starring in the films announced Wednesday are Kate Bosworth, Demi Moore, Liv Tyler, Emma Roberts, John C. Reilly, Thomas Haden Church, Blair Underwood, Vera Farmiga and Ellens Barkin and Burstyn.
More big names will be attached to the festival's premiere film category, to be revealed this afternoon. Once all the films are announced, the list will include 115 features representing 28 countries. Short films will be announced at a later date.
"It is all at once exciting, fun, crazy, engaging, visceral, and sometimes even painful," festival director John Cooper said of the Jan. 20 through 30 event, headquartered in Park City with satellite sites in Ogden, Salt Lake City and Sundance.
"We can explain storylines, we can share what we know of each artist's unique journey, but ultimately what we will experience for 10 days in January is different for each of us," Cooper said in a prepared statement.
"It's the spark from the filmmakers, their passion, that brings 200 unique worlds to life and, in turn, ignites the audience. The films, conversations, encounters are there to experience. And that's what makes Sundance so magical."
The films were selected from 3,812 feature-length film submissions. Trevor Groth, programming director, said that number is higher than ever.
"It is a testament to the passion and creativity of filmmakers everywhere that they are able to preserve and stay true to their vision. The caliber of films submitted this year was exceptional and made for exhilarating discussion among the programmers. Now that discussion gets turned over to the audience."
Films to be featured in Ogden's venue, Peery's Egyptian Theater, will be announced in mid-December. Ogden tickets will go on sale Jan. 8 at the theater. Tickets to films screening in Park City, Salt Lake City or Sundance must be purchased at Park City or Salt Lake City box offices.
