First-grader suspended for making gun hand gesture and saying 'pow'

WASHINGTON - The parents of a 6-year-old boy are fighting the first-grader’s suspension from a public school in Montgomery County, Maryland for pointing his finger like a gun and saying “pow,” an incident school officials characterized in a disciplinary letter as a threat “to shoot a student.”

MIAMI — Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for five games because of his comments about Fidel Castro.

MOUNT DORA, Fla. -- Jerry Buell, who was reinstated to his Mount Dora High School history teaching position following a Facebook rant about gay marriage, said he felt like he was "thrown in the blender."

Buell was investigated by the school district to see if his Facebook comments violated a professional code of ethics. He had made a Facebook post saying New York's legalized gay marriage made him want to throw up and that the unions were part of a "cesspool." The comments sparked national attention with both the conservative Liberty Counsel and the American Civil Liberties Union backing Buell's right to make the comments.

Teacher suspended for Facebook comments on gay marriage

MOUNT DORA, Fla. -- A Mount Dora High School teacher of the year was suspended from the classroom and reassigned pending an investigation by the Lake County School Board after controversial comments he made about same-sex unions on Facebook.

Jerry Buell, a longtime Lake County social studies teacher, said during a recent Facebook exchange that he "almost threw up" in response to a news story about legalized same-sex marriage in New York.
