Swans

National budget cuts may have put the kibosh on one event highlighting the annual migration of tundra swans through Utah, but the swans are still here, and state wildlife officials are staging viewing events at two Top of Utah locations this weekend.

This Saturday, the Division of Wildlife Resources will host Utah’s annual Tundra Swan Day at Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area west of Farmington and Salt Creek WMA west of Corinne. Admission is free.

Sequester shoots down this weekend's Swan Day in Box Elder

BRIGHAM CITY — Some of Utah’s first victims of Washington, D.C.’s sequestration plan may be bird-watchers on the lookout for migrating tundra swans.

“Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge has canceled its (March 9) Swan Day due to budget shortfalls,” according to a news release issued Tuesday by Bird Refuge Manager Bob Barrett.

“Decisions from the Washington office mandate this action. This is an unexpected situation.”

Tundra swans make stops at new areas

A regular visitor to Utah’s wetlands this time of year is discovering that its favorite local food source isn’t as abundant as usual due to drier than normal weather in 2012.

Tundra swans are visiting some new areas as they migrate through Utah this fall, searching for the pondweed that helps sustain them as they stop to refuel on the way to wintering grounds further south.
