Now that he’s away from the pool, Michael Phelps can reflect — really reflect — on what he accomplished.

Pretty amazing stuff.

Plans for pool boiler in place

FARMINGTON -- City officials have approved a plan to replace the boiler in the community swimming pool.

The plan calls for city staff to tap into fund balances from the soccer, basketball, and tennis program of the city recreational department to fund the $28,000 replacement cost, according to Neil Miller, parks and recreation director.

Riverdale eases pool setback ordinance

Riverdale’s ordinance governing placement of swimming pools, spas and hot tubs is now less restrictive.

City staff reviewed similar ordinances from other Utah cities and found that Riverdale’s was “excessive as far as where a pool could be located on a residential lot,” according to an executive summary prepared by Randy Daily, community development director.

A recent inquiry from a resident led city staff to review the ordinance, which required pools to be 35 feet from the property line.

Mixed-gender swim relays to debut at World Cup

The opening meet of the World Cup in Dubai on Tuesday will feature 4x50-meter mixed relays for the first time. Teams will be made up of two men and two women, and it is up to them to decide the order — so, for instance, a woman could race against a man on the anchor leg.

WILLARD — A Utah woman who successfully completed her swim of the English Channel did so to prove to her former high school swim team coaches that there is more to the sport than speed.

“On Sept. 3, 2012, I swam 23 to 26 miles across the English Channel,” said Willard resident Joelle Beard, a recreational swim team instructor.

But Beard, a Utah State University student, didn’t do it without first receiving a few “helpful” pointers from Gordon Gridley, of Syracuse, who accomplished the same swim over the summer.

Lochte: Racing prince in Vegas ’the coolest thing’

LAS VEGAS — Team USA’s swimming golden boy says it was "the coolest thing" that Britain’s Prince Harry challenged him to swim race at a Las Vegas pool party, but he’s glad he missed the royal’s Sin City controversy.

Storms, stings push Nyad to end Cuba-to-Florida swim

KEY WEST, Fla. — Diana Nyad ended her fourth attempt in nearly 35 years to swim across the Straits of Florida on Tuesday, her dream of setting a record thwarted by storms, jellyfish stings, shark threats, hypothermia and swollen lips.

LONDON — Missy Franklin stared out on the horde of reporters, suddenly sounding very much like a high school senior-to-be. “I don’t like being up here alone,” she said nervously.

Then, just like that, she turned on a big smile and worked the room like a pro.

Thanks to this Colorado teenager, America’s swim hopes are back on track at the Olympics.

Syracuse resident hopes to swim across the English Channel

SYRACUSE — Gordon Gridley has come a long way from the time he feared swimming in the deep end of the pool.

The 40-year-old Syracuse resident has set a goal of swimming the English Channel from Dover, England, to northern France, sometime between Aug. 8 and Aug. 16, when it is neap tide.

Because of the tides, the best opportunity to swim the channel is during neap tide, when the waxing half-moon has the least amount of lunar influence on the channel’s tidal flow, Gridley said.
