Girls basketball: Martin goes off to fuel Titans' victory

SYRACUSE -- For three years running, the Titans have been the flagship of Region 1 girls basketball.

With Oklahoma State assistant coach Bill Annan in attendance, Cowgirls signee Brittney Martin splashed in a season-high 31 points on 13-of-22 shooting Thursday and state 5-A runner-up Syracuse High clinched no less than a tie for its fourth consecutive league title with a 62-50 victory over the Warriors.

Boys basketball: Warriors take care of Darts

KAYSVILLE -- This time the numbers don't lie.

Weber dominated all key statistical categories and rode a strong second half to sweep the season series against Davis with a 56-42 dusting of the Darts on Tuesday evening.

At the risk of brain warp, some of the mind-numbing numbers include a 36-23 rebounding advantage and 23-of-26 from the free throw line for the Warriors. Weber held Davis to 29.4 percent from the floor and 0-of-10 from the 3-point line in the second half while shooting 69.2 percent in the second stanza from the field to finish at 50 percent for the game.

Girls basketball: Layton wins with teamwork

LAYTON -- On a team devoid of star power, it is all about defense and teamwork for the once-beaten Lancers.

In its final home game this season, Layton High again got balanced scoring en route to a 55-37 Region 1 victory Tuesday over the Silver Wolves.

"I'm not really emotional. I play every game the same it feels like," said Lancers senior center Courtnee Wood. "I came up as a freshman, so when it started, it seemed like it would be a long four years. But it's just flown by."

Prep sports: Mountain Crest swims to strong showing

PROVO -- Skyline swam away with the state 4-A swimming titles on Saturday, outpointing the rest of field in impressive fashion at BYU's pool.

After the two-day event, the Skyline girls tallied 458.5 points, followed by Woods Cross 9235) and Olympus (211).

Mountain Crest was fourth, followed by Logan and Sky View, with Box Elder 13th.

Prep basketball: Darts roll up big lead in victory over Titans

SYRACUSE -- The Davis Darts once again built a double-digit lead on the road at Syracuse.

This time they didn't let go.

A year after watching a 27-point lead evaporate in a 49-47 loss to the Titans, Davis used a barrage of Jace Johnson early and a parade of Karter Chisholm free throws late to hold Syracuse at bay in a 66-56 victory.

Three-time defending league champion Syracuse High had to settle for matching its season-high point total Tuesday in steam-rolling the Silver Wolves 80-34 in a Region 1 romp.

Prep swimming: Warriors lay claim to Region 1 bragging rights

The Utah high school swimming season is winding to a close.

And it's been a fun one in Region 1.

The Top of Utah region gathered at Layton's Surf 'N Swim on Friday for the Region 1 championships, and every team had its high points.

Utah drill team state titles up for grabs

The best drill teams in regions 1, 5, 6, 11 and 17 will take aim at state championship titles this weekend at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

The 5-A and 4-A championships will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday, the 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams take to the floor from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Defending 4-A champion Bountiful will face strong challenges from 2011 runner-up Bonneville, as well as Mountain Crest, Box Elder, Sky View and Logan from Region 5, as well as Clearfield out of Region 6.

Girls basketball: Titans rout Lancers in battle of unbeatens

LAYTON -- The "Duel in Davis" was a dandy -- for the state 5-A runner-up Titans.

Despite scoring 14.42 points less than its state-leading 71.42 points per game average, Syracuse High is the state's only undefeated girls basketball team after Friday's 57-41 Region 1 victory over the Lancers played before a sizable crowd.

Girls basketball: Titans continue to roll

PLEASANT VIEW -- The state 5-A runner-up Titans are hitting their stride, but how do you combat the state's highest-scoring girls basketball team?

Three-time defending Region 1 champion Syracuse High pulverized the Warriors -- outscoring Weber 47-25 in the second half -- to remain undefeated with a decisive 80-52 victory Friday in Richard R. Conolly Gymnasium.

Prep basketball: Warriors escape Syracuse with win

SYRACUSE -- The Weber Warriors knew they were going to have to absorb the best shot from a suddenly reeling Syracuse team.

And the Titans nearly delivered the knockout blow.

However a potential game-tying 3-point hoist by Jordan Jones drifted right and allowed the Warriors to escape with a 49-46 decision, dealing Syracuse its fourth straight loss.
