Syracuse to add attorney, engineer to city staff

SYRACUSE -- City staff will soon add a full-time attorney and a full-time engineer.

The city council voted 3-2 on Tuesday to fund the additions to staff on a full-time basis in a session highlighted by contentious debate and a question of whether lame duck council members should be voting on the matter.

Developer to buy 215 acres in Syracuse

SYRACUSE -- The sale of 215 acres of open land, once belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to an area developer could bring 1,200 or more new jobs to the area, the mayor speculates.

The parcel, north of Syracuse High School, between 1000 West and 2000 West, is to be developed as light manufacturing, with the hope of bringing 1,200 jobs to the city during the next three years, Mayor Jamie Nagle said.

Incumbent Doug Peterson beat challenger Dan Schuler for the third and final seat on the city council by one vote in final results tallied Tuesday.

SYRACUSE -- Syracuse police officer James Nielson has been recognized by the Davis Board of Health for his outstanding efforts in enforcing tobacco laws, particularly with minors. The board presented Nielson, who is the school resource officer at Syracuse High School, with an award Nov. 8.

Winter parking guidelines in effect in Syracuse

SYRACUSE -- Winter parking guidelines go into effect in this city as of Tuesday.

The guidelines limit parking of any kind of vehicle on city streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Tuesday to March 15 on any day it snows or snow is forecast.

Police Chief Brian Wallace said the intent of the rule is to clear streets for snow removal and that police cite violations only in times of a storm.

Money matters on the minds of Syracuse City Council candidates

SYRACUSE -- Managing finances and needs is the prime issue driving the race for three city council seats in this city.

Three incumbents head the field of six candidates in the Nov. 8 election. Councilmen Doug Peterson and Alan Clark are both seeking their second term and Councilman Matt Ocana, who was appointed to his post, is seeking his first elected term. The challengers are Karianne Lisonbee, Craig Johnson and Daniel Schuler.

Resident verbally tests authority of Syracuse mayor

SYRACUSE — Mayor Jamie Nagle got a test of her authority to have a resident removed from a city meeting on Tuesday, minutes before the city council voted to table a new outline of rules of conduct which spells out the mayor’s and other council members’ authority and guidelines for order.
