Does government owe you money?

PROVO -- Thousands of Utahns may be owed money by the federal government, but they're facing an April 18 deadline to claim it.

The Internal Revenue Service says 7,600 Utahns could still be eligible to receive tax returns for 2007.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports that those who qualify failed to file federal income tax reports that year, despite estimates that they should have received an average return of $540.

The IRS has an estimated total of $8.3 million that remains unclaimed by Utahns, and says there's no penalty for those due to receive a return.

An estimated 1.1 million Americans did not file tax reports in 2007. After three years, any unclaimed money goes to the U.S. Treasury.
