Teacher uses experience as dropout to help at-risk students

OGDEN -- When Cassie Cox dropped out of high school in 1992, all she saw were dead ends. Now, 19 years later, she inspires the at-risk students at Two Rivers High School to reach for the stars. She credits her life change to one major thing: education.

Cox remembers well the feeling of hopelessness she felt when she became pregnant at the age of 17.

OGDEN -- It has been six years since the Utah Education Association Road Trip has made its way to Ogden, so UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh had much to discuss Monday while visiting several schools in both Ogden and Weber school districts.

Ogden School District seeks quieter fall

OGDEN -- After a volatile summer of contract-signing ultimatums and teacher protests, new Ogden School District Superintendent Brad C. Smith is hoping for a quieter and more productive autumn.

"We are not trying to re-create who we think is to blame at this time," Smith told the Standard-Examiner. "It was a breakdown of effective communications among parties, which led to a whole series of unfortunate results."

Teachers union seeks proof that Ogden School District didn't break laws

OGDEN -- The American Federation of Teachers, Utah chapter, has accused the Ogden School Board of breaking two Utah laws and has requested the board release documents and recordings related to non-negotiated teacher contracts sent out in July.
