Teen shot during scuffle with Utah trooper dies

SALT LAKE CITY -- Authorities say a 17-year-old boy has died after being shot by a gun he was apparently carrying during a scuffle with a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson says Ashton Cummings died Thursday of complications.

The highway patrol has said a trooper stopped an SUV Nov. 29 and smelled marijuana. The trooper called for backup and asked the driver and several others to exit the SUV.

When Cummings allegedly started to run away the trooper went after him. Highway patrol spokesman Jeff Nigbur has said a pistol apparently being carried by the teen discharged.

The highway patrol says one shot was fired and Cummings was struck in the head. Hutson says it appears Cummings had the gun in his hand and it went off when he turned.
