OGDEN -- Two agencies in Top of Utah that work with at-risk youth have received hefty grants from the Daniels Fund. The Boys and Girls Club of Brigham City received $50,000, and Youth Impact in Ogden received $41,576.
The Daniels Fund is named for Bill Daniels, a Denver pioneer in the cable TV industry and a philanthropist. After he died his entire estate was turned over to the fund to make donations to charities around the Intermountain West that work with the disadvantaged. On Friday, the fund announced more than $11 million in donations.
Youth Impact is an inner-city program in Ogden that works with youth.
Nicole Hall, staff member at Youth Impact, said this is the third year that the Daniels Fund has awarded funds to Youth Impact to operate its "Getting on Track" program, which monitors children's school grades and provides tutoring and other education assistance.
JeuneElle Jeffries, executive director of the Brigham City Boys and Girls Club, said the organization will use its money to "continue to run programs for kids. We're going to focus on some educational things the kids need," such as math and reading after school.
"And do some more with teens, career development and technology."
The club is also moving into a new building next week, and this will allow it to set up age-specific programs in the larger space. The club operates the only after-school program in Box Elder County. It has a branch in Tremonton that will also benefit from the funds, she said.
Other Utah recipients of Daniels Fund grants this quarter include the Ability Foundation, Murray; House of Hope and Housing Opportunities, both of Salt Lake City, and Transitions, Blanding.
