SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Senate has passed a ban on cell phones use by drivers younger than 18 years old.
The Deseret News of Salt Lake City says Senate Bill 45 would allow police officers to stop a teen driver for using a cell phone and issue a citation that carries a $50 fine.
The bill passed 21-4 Thursday. It now moves to the House.
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Ross Romero of Salt Lake City, the bill sponsor, says teen drivers should be encouraged to be responsible on the road and focus on their driving.
Romero says exceptions are provided for teen drivers talking to their parents or emergency personnel.
Republican Sen. Daniel Thatcher of West Valley says the bill violates personal freedoms and encourages a nanny state mentality.
