Shoppers: Black Thursday/Friday even pleasant

RIVERDALE -- The entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well Thursday night, well before the traditional start of Black Friday.

Those who were some of the first in line at the Riverdale Target store just after they ate their Thanksgiving meal reported that the wait was pleasant and their shopping experience enjoyable.

Black Friday: Discovering kindness amid the chaos

If there's one thing I've never been shy about, it's getting a good deal when shopping.

My friends have often heard me say how my favorite jacket cost me 99 cents. Hearing myself, I've realized that, when I get a deal, I value

that item even more than if I'd paid full price.

Variety of churches celebrate interfaith Thanksgiving together

OGDEN -- Expressions of gratitude are one common force that world religions have in common.

Such was the sentiment Sunday at the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service sponsored by Ogden's Interfaith Works at Your Community Connection.

SNOWBASIN -- While many shoppers arose well before the crack of dawn today to take advantage of Black Friday shopping deals, Marshall McGonegal and his friends opted for Black Thursday.

McGonegal, of Eden, was first in line to board the Needles Gondola at Snowbasin as it opened its lifts for the 2011-12 season -- his reward for arriving at the resort around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Free exercise helps Thanksgiving feasters burn calories

OGDEN -- The numbers were way up Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at a gym in Ogden offering free exercise time to burn calories before everybody sat down to likely the heaviest meal of the year.

By 11 a.m., staff had counted 541 people checking in during the "Turkey Burn" promotion at Gold's Gym in downtown Ogden. That's approaching the 569 total for the entire previous day, they said.

It's no pie in the sky: Sandy's sells a million

OGDEN -- At 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sandy's Fine Foods had been open for 20 minutes and had 545 pies to sell to hit a million.

Would they do it? "We've got the camera ready, we've got the certificates," said Suzy Sackrell, one of the owners.

"We're ready."

But who would buy the one millionth pie in the restaurant's 35-year career and win free pie for a year? A regular? A first-timer?

For plumbers, it's a Black Friday too

Plumber Jerry Feiman's truck bears a slogan that could double as a warning to Thanksgiving cooks: A flush beats a full house.

The day after the food-heavy holiday is typically the busiest of the year for residential plumbers, like a Black Friday for drains and pipes.

Some are holding potluck dinners instead of springing for the entire feast. Others are staying home rather than flying. And a few are skipping the turkey altogether.
