Prayer, Mass to precede Thanksgiving run/walk

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Members of the community have one final opportunity to participate in a Thanksgiving run/walk led by Sister Stephanie Mongeon, of Mount Benedict Monastery.

Mongeon and her fellow sisters at the monastery have announced that they will leave Ogden once their property is sold. But Mongeon will be present at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day when the 27th annual event begins in the southwest parking lot at Ogden Regional Medical Center, 5475 Adams Ave. Parkway in Washington Terrace.

Turkey donations still 1,000 short

OGDEN — The United Way’s turkey drive for Thanksgiving dinners was still 1,000 birds short of its goal Friday afternoon.

Volunteers needed for Thanksgiving charity event

OGDEN — Members of area churches are invited to volunteer to help at the annual “Gift of Love” Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Marshall White Community Center, 222 28th St., in Ogden.

Facing a turkey deficit, United Way asks for donations

OGDEN — With only a week left before the big day, United Way of Northern Utah is in desperate need of Thanksgiving turkeys for local needy families.

Robert Hunter, director of United Way of Northern Utah, said the agency needs a total of 1,900 Thanksgiving turkeys by Saturday and currently has fewer than 100.

Seniors invited to free lunch Thursday

OGDEN — The Ogden and Ben Lomond high school key clubs will host a senior citizen Thanksgiving lunch at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the commons area at Ogden High School, 2828 Harrison Blvd.

Interfaith event to highlight traditions of gratitude

OGDEN — The public is invited to participate at 5 p.m. Nov. 18 in the annual Interfaith Works Thanksgiving Celebration to be held at Your Community Connection, 2261 Adams Ave. in Ogden.

Those who attend will have the chance to learn from a Jewish tradition for remembering to be thankful every day.

First Church of Christ Scientist to hold Thanksgiving Day service

OGDEN — First Church of Christ Scientist, Ogden, is inviting the public to participate with its members Thanksgiving Day for a special service.

The 11 a.m. event at the church, at 24th Street and Monroe Boulevard, will feature a reading of this year’s presidential proclamation naming Nov. 22 as Thanksgiving Day.

MMA star Castillo the force behind Thanksgiving dinner charity

\David Castillo is close to reaching the elite levels of professional mixed martial arts. If Castillo, 16-4 and ranked 42nd in the world, defeats Justin Buchholz in Orem on Nov. 16 for the Showdown Lightweight MMA championship, a call from the UFC probably isn’t too far off.

However, Castillo’s got something else on his mind this month as well, he and his family are the energy behind a Wasatch Front-wide effort to provide Thanksgiving dinner to many needy families.

Herbert talks turkey as he tours charitable groups in Ogden area

OGDEN — Gov. Gary Herbert helped United Way kick off its annual turkey drive Friday afternoon by dropping off a couple of turkeys and some ham to a few community service organizations.

“United Way is such a good organization, especially in Utah,” Herbert said as he toured the local offices and shook hands with employees.

“You have always been very supportive of our charitable organizations,” Robert Hunter, director of United Way of Northern Utah, told Herbert. Herbert said he likes to support private-sector charities that are always willing to give and help others.

Food bank: Credit union donations help, but way more needed for Thanksgiving

OGDEN — In America First Credit Union’s warehouse Friday morning, Ginette Bott cooed and cheered, saying things like, “Oh wow!” and “Look at all the peanut butter!” and “We love to see baby food!”

Bott, chief marketing officer for the Utah Food Bank, was making rounds picking up donated turkeys and other food for this year’s holiday food drive.

The credit union’s donation is a good start, she said as she pondered eight pallet loads of groceries and 268 turkeys she’d loaded up. But there’s a long way to go, Bott said.

Shoppers: Black Thursday/Friday even pleasant

RIVERDALE -- The entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well Thursday night, well before the traditional start of Black Friday.

Those who were some of the first in line at the Riverdale Target store just after they ate their Thanksgiving meal reported that the wait was pleasant and their shopping experience enjoyable.

Snowbasin stuffed for Thanksgiving

SNOWBASIN -- While many shoppers arose well before the crack of dawn today to take advantage of Black Friday shopping deals, Marshall McGonegal and his friends opted for Black Thursday.

McGonegal, of Eden, was first in line to board the Needles Gondola at Snowbasin as it opened its lifts for the 2011-12 season -- his reward for arriving at the resort around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Free exercise helps Thanksgiving feasters burn calories

OGDEN -- The numbers were way up Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at a gym in Ogden offering free exercise time to burn calories before everybody sat down to likely the heaviest meal of the year.

By 11 a.m., staff had counted 541 people checking in during the "Turkey Burn" promotion at Gold's Gym in downtown Ogden. That's approaching the 569 total for the entire previous day, they said.
