Oregon track coach takes student to prom, loses job

PENDLETON, Ore. -- The daughter-in-law of Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman has been dismissed as a volunteer track coach at a small Eastern Oregon high school because she escorted a 17-year-old boy to last month's prom.

Name Game: Local athletes get their hall of fame due

A couple of halls of fame will soon open their doors for new members.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference will induct six athletes and two teams in July to the RMAC Hall of Fame. The group includes Julie Jenkins-Donley, a standout runner at Adams State.

A Plain City native, Jenkins-Donley earned 19 All-America honors in cross country and the 800 and 1,500 meters through the years at Adams State and BYU, and participated in the Barcelona Olympics. Her 1985 NAIA national indoor championship team will also be inducted on July 20 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Weber State host annual May Twilight Meet

OGDEN -- The Weber State outdoor track and field teams wrap up their 2012 regular season schedule Wednesday, hosting the WSU Twilight Meet at the Chick Hislop Track at Stewart Stadium.

Prep track and field: Nye sets 5-A record with blistering mile

KAYSVILLE -- Brad Nye is the mile guy. After rocketing to high school track fame by winning the New Balance Indoor National mile in March, and then proving he has outdoor chops by winning the Arcadia mile in 4:08.8, Nye recorded a blistering 1,600 Friday at the Davis High School Invitational to topple the school record, the meet record, and the state 5-A record. His time of 4:09.67 narrowly missed the overall state mile record of 4:09.28 and lowered the 5-A record by roughly 4 seconds.

LONDON -- Wednesday marks 100 days until the London Olympics, making it a good time to look at some of the athletes who will be thrilling sports fans on the biggest of stages this summer.

College sports roundup: WSU productive at two-day meet

OGDEN -- Weber State's track and field teams made steady improvement Friday and Saturday, participating in the two-day Utah Spring Track and Field Classic.

The meet included 22 events on Friday at Utah's new McCarthey Family Track and Field complex, and 22 additional evenst Saturday at Stewart Stadium.

Friday in Salt Lake City, the WSU women had an outstanding afternoon. In the 200 meters, Amanda Alston (24.26) and Kristin Billings (24.37) each ran career bests. Alston also ran a personal best of 12.10 in the 100 meters.

WSU roundup: Wildcat women set new records

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Weber State junior Sarah Callister shattered WSU's school record with a time of 32:51 in the women's 10,000 meters Friday night at the Stanford Invitational.

The former Ogden High School distance runner broke Lindsey Anderson's old record by 25 seconds and broke the Big Sky Conference mark by 16 seconds. In the process, Callister not only qualified for the upcoming NCAA championships, she qualified for the Olympic trials.

Junior Taylor Thornley recorded a time of 34:31 in the women's 10,000 and junior Kayla Blackford ran a 35:13 in a race held in San Francisco earlier in the day.

Both times qualified for nationals.

LONDON -- The "Flying Housewife" has landed a subway stop in London after all.

Darts, Titans battle back and forth at UHSTCA championships

Davis topped Copper Hills in the girls team chase, led by a talented group of sprinters and hurdlers. Sylvia Harrison won the 100 meters and was second to teammate Adelyn Jones in the 100-meter hurdles. The Darts also won the sprint and medley relays.

WSU piles up qualifying marks at UVU meet

OREM -- Weber State's men and women outdoor track and field teams took advantage of some great spring time weather to post solid early season times and marks at the Utah Valley University Invitational, Friday in Orem.

Coach Dan Walker's men posted 10 qualifying times/marks for the 2012 Big Sky Conference outdoor track and field championships. Zach Parry qualified in both the shot put (52-03.25) and hammer throw (188-90.75) to lead the way.

"We had a really nice performance today," said Walker. "A lot of our athletes were competing for the first time because of the rain-out two weeks ago in San Diego. The extra two weeks of practice paid off today. We had three great times in the 400 meters and two in the 400 meter hurdles, and both relay teams took advantage of the good weather to put up some good times."

Prep baseball: Tigers bounce back

OGDEN -- After suffering their first defeat in region play to start the season Tuesday afternoon, the Ogden Tigers got back on track by defeating crosstown rivals Ben Lomond 8-0 Thursday afternoon thanks to a couple of big innings at the plate.

"I was proud of the way that we responded after what happened earlier this week," Ogden coach Troy Kolan said. "Joe (Bischoff) pitched a great game and kept them off-balance with his curveball today. We had some key hits from Hunter (Anderson) and Kameron Laird and that made all the difference."

Both pitchers threw the ball extremely well in the beginning as Bischoff and Ben Lomond's Alex Craft each threw three scoreless innings. Those three innings lasted a grand total of 30 minutes as each team was cruising defensively.
