More draconian Utah DUI proposal sparks debate

A recommendation last week from the National Transportation Safety Board to state policy makers to lower the blood alcohol content level for DUI arrests from .08 to .05 has drawn mixed reactions in the Top of Utah.

Ogden Police Lt. Kevin Cottrell is in favor of Utah legislators enacting such a measure, saying anything that gives law enforcement better footing in the fight against impaired driving is a positive for the community.

Groups form coalition to push look at West Davis Corridor alternatives

SYRACUSE — A coalition made up of environmental and citizens groups wants the state to take a step back from its work on the West Davis Corridor.

Members of Utahns for Better Transportation, the Sierra Club, Friends of the Great Salt Lake and several other groups held a news conference Tuesday at the Syracuse Arts Academy to formally announce their collective opposition to the Utah Department of Transportation’s proposed West Davis Corridor.

The coalition wants the state to delay its environmental impact statement to undertake an additional study of an alternative-build solution that does not include a new road.

The group says the proposed corridor is not only unnecessary, but that it also would do more harm than good.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, and 82 other members of Congress are asking Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to make an official announcement that would keep air traffic control towers open at small airports across the nation.

The group, which is made up of both Republicans and Democrats, sent LaHood a letter Thursday, asking him to utilize a provision in the Reducing Flight Delays Act of 2013 that would prevent the closure of 149 Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control towers, which includes the tower at the Ogden-Hinckley Airport.

Roadwork ramping up in Northern Utah

CLEARFIELD — Despite winterlike weather conditions across much of the Top of Utah, spring is here, and that means work on local roads is starting to ramp up.

Phase 1 of the $70 million State Road 193 project in Clearfield has started between Center and Main streets, and the work brings with it some major impacts to the travelling public.

SR 193 will be extended from State Street on 700 South in Clearfield, then around the Freeport Center to 200 South and then west to 2000 West in Syracuse.

Beginning today, Main Street through Clearfield will close indefinitely everywhere north of 700 South. Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Vic Saunders said the north end of south Main Street will eventually be turned into a cul-de-sac to make way for a new overpass.

Ogden Canyon road closures impair businesses

OGDEN — As work to replace a 100-year-old waterline in Ogden Canyon marches into its fifth month, businesses want potential patrons to know one thing: They’re still open.

Purchasing right of way and working with business owners are now the priorities in preparing for the actual work. Jefferies said UDOT is keeping businesses in mind.
