Trucks on federal highways could soon be heavier

Drivers could share the highways with much heavier trucks if Congress decides that the efficiencies of larger loads trump concerns about road damage and safety.

The Safe and Efficient Transportation Act would raise the maximum weight for commercial trucks that routinely travel on highways to 97,000 pounds in most states.

One California man has died as a result of a crash involving at least 25 vehicles Saturday morning on westbound Interstate 84 near Mountain Green. The accident began when a double-tanker carrying butane gas jack-knifed on a bridge because of icy conditions. Two semis hit that truck, then at least 22 more vehicles, including another semi, hit the first three semis. The man who died was a truck driver who stepped out of his vehicle onto a jersey barrier, then slipped and fell 50 feet onto railroad tracks, officials say. (Courtesy of the Utah Highway Patrol)

Impacts of 9/11 far-reaching -- and local

OGDEN -- All Utahns go through intense security at the airport because of the terrorist attacks 10 years ago Sunday, but how many know:

  •  Why one museum's volunteers had to have background checks before they could show visitors the displays?
  •  Why there are so many Saudi students in Utah and so few Iranians?
  • Why the books you check out at the library could still get you in trouble?

Pleasant View council approves heavy truck route

PLEASANT VIEW -- City council members approved a commercial heavy truck route that will use Elberta Drive and Pleasant View Drive and head trucks west on their route out of the city to U.S. 89.

Council members struggled a bit with how to handle local deliveries such as the delivery of furniture. The ordinance now states local deliveries by truck should take the most reasonable route available in Pleasant View and into an adjacent city.

"For that matter, if their destination point is their shop in Harrisvillle, they could take the most direct route to their shop," said City Administrator J.J. Allen.

(MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner) A train hit a truck in North Salt Lake on Monday, tipping over the second empty trailer the truck was hauling. Only one person was injured in the crash — a refinery worker was taken to an area hospital with a compound leg fracture, officials say. The railroad tracks are marked only by a crossing sign. The investigation into the accident is continuing.
