Time to apply for early turkey hunting permit

Thanksgiving may be just a few weeks in the rear-view mirror, but for hunters who pursue the iconic bird that represents that holiday, it's already time to think about next year's turkey hunt.

Those who want to get a jump on the Utah's spring turkey hunting season can apply this month for limited-entry permits, which allow a relatively small number of hunters to head into the field in April, ahead of the general turkey season in May. Depending on the weather, the limited-entry hunt can be the best chance a hunter has of bagging that gobbler.

CDC: 1 death, 76 illnesses linked to ground turkey

WASHINGTON — Federal officials say one person has died from salmonella poisoning that appears to be linked to eating ground turkey, but the government so far has declined to say who produced the meat or initiate a recall.

Spring turkey season rejuvenates 77-year-old hunter

WARSAW, Mo. -- Ken Just knows where to go when he is in search of his version of the fountain of youth.

Each spring, Just, 77, makes the long trip from his home in northern Minnesota to the woods near Truman Lake in west-central Missouri.

There, he meets up with guide Steve Stokes, and the thrill of Missouri turkey hunting helps him rediscover his youth.

Still time to bag that wild turkey

Those who didn't draw a permit to hunt wild turkeys during Utah's limited-entry hunt can still hunt turkeys in the state this spring.

The general statewide hunt starts Friday for those who were 15 years of age or younger on Jan. 27. Adult hunters get to join the youngsters next Monday, and the hunt ends on May 31.

Justin Dolling, upland game and migratory game bird coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, said turkey populations are strong enough that all of Utah's hunters can participate this year.

But despite how well the state's turkey population is doing overall, Dolling said the birds are struggling in two areas of the state.
