Should school be one big pajama party?

In elementary school, everyone looks forward to Pajama Day -- the rare opportunity to be completely comfy in class and pretend that the entire school is having a slumber party.

However, many students continue to host their own unofficial and intermittent Pajama Days during their high school years, showing up for class in their favorite pair of jammies, with the occasional fuzzy blankie in tow.

Sue Johnson

Futura leader inspires others

Even before you meet her, you can guess that Sue Johnson is a very powerful, successful businesswoman.

The reception area of Futura Industries, a Clearfield Freeport Center company of which Johnson is president, is full of awards - trophies, plaques and letters, even an article taken from Forbes magazine naming Johnson as one of the 100 most powerful women of 2011.

Ann Romney

Few have more influence on the world than mothers

"His wife has actually never worked a day in her life."

What person would say such a stereotypical, chauvinist statement about a stay-at-home mother of five? An unmarried, sexist working man, commenting in ignorance? Sadly, no, but another woman, political pundit Hilary Rosen, who made the comment in regard to Ann Romney.

It takes a death to open public's eye

Today in our society we are seeing many rising problems. We see murders, robberies, drugs ... the list is endless.

But one particular issue has caught my attention recently -- bullying and suicide. Many different types of people are bullied for various reasons, but right now, bullying based on sexual orientation is taking place in our schools, even here in northern Utah.

The things I've learned ...

Editor's note: We learn new things in the most unexpected of ways, so with this initial segment, TX. reporter Rachel Badali offers a periodic look at some of the knowledge she's discovered.

Some Things I Learned From Reality TV:

When in doubt ... storm out.

We all say things we wish we wouldn't have.

Hair height may vary depending on your vicinity to Texas or Jersey.

Heartbreak only lasts a few episodes, and then it's time to move on.

When throwing a party, invite everyone (including your enemies).

Sex ed a must from parents, teachers

Everyone remembers their sexual education experience, if they actually got one.

Your teacher walks in front of the class and says, "All right, boys and girls, today we are learning about sex."

The people in the back of the room snicker, other students have their heads down or are red-faced. Some kids are scared and some just want to run away.

Typical feelings, but what most kids don't understand is what they will learn may be the difference between getting pregnant or not, or contracting a sexually transmitted disease or not.

Classics vs. contemporary: Maybe schools should try to find more of a balance between all genres available to readers

Classics vs. contemporary

By the end of the school year, thousands of students are ready to throw their copies of Shakespeare into a bonfire, frustrated from analyzing the complicated and often confusing language of the classics.

Background ninjas make sure the high school show goes on

As show time is nigh at hand, call time approaches. Actors get in hair and makeup and head to warm-ups. After participating in many long-standing good-luck traditions, be it singing or chanting, the actors take their places effortlessly and the show starts.

Church basketball: What ever happened to brotherly love?

During a recent church ball game, I found myself wondering what sick-minded person honestly thought of the idea of combining church and basketball.

My team was being throttled, 77-21 to be exact, and the other team showed no signs of tiring. I was actually expecting them to break 100 points. However, our loving head coach finally stepped forward and said we were forfeiting the game. Thus brought the end to the mass slaughter referred to as the LDS 6th Ward versus the Meadows Ward B.

Prom etiquette

Prom is the moment every girl and boy looks forward to, from the time they are in kindergarten all the way up to the night before it happens.

It's going to be the best night of your life right?

Well, that depends on how you do it. There are things you need to do for prom, and things that you absolutely, under no circumstance, should do.

School dances don't just happen; they take planning

Everyone loves high school dances, right? Shopping for those cute dresses (or picking out ties, if you're a guy), whispering about who's going to ask who, praying that your crush will ask you for a slow dance -- it's all part of the high school experience.

Life lessons compliments of our animated friends

Everyone loves a good animated movie; most of us have grown up with them. We cheered on our heroes as they tackled the obstacles in their lives, we felt for the characters when they went through extreme hardships, and we may have even cried or felt sad when characters passed away.

We encouraged our favorite animated characters as they tried new things, burst through barriers and escaped what was holding them back. We were not only entertained, but we also picked up a few good lessons along the way.

'Hunger Games' fulfills all of our expectations

I first read "The Hunger Games" out of pure necessity this summer. Let me explain.

I first fell upon "The Hunger Games" novel while I was in West Africa on a backpacking trip with my aunt. I only had two pieces of media to entertain myself with each evening when I was finished hiking and adjusting to culture shock for the day: this book and a tabloid magazine. I opted for the book. And what a fantastic choice it turned out to be.

Teen moms face tough decisions, some rewards

You feel a tight ball of anxiety in your stomach just before you take off the lid of the little pink wand. There's only one red line; you let out a sigh of relief -- you're not pregnant.

If that has happened to you, then you know what a pregnancy scare is like. Many girls have at least one in their teen years.

Prom from two perspectives -- Her view:

Wake Up: A smile spreads across your face as you realize today's the day.

Day Date Prep: Here's the trick, you want to look as nice as you can without going all out, because you want to save the wow factor for tonight.

Doorbell No. 1: He's here! Cue the heart-pounding -- oh stop it, it's just a day activity, relax. After he gets the car door for you and walks around, you think, "Wow, he cleaned his car, it looks nice in here." You make small talk for a few minutes and soon warm up to each other.
