Philippines repairs after typhoon kills 21

MANILA, Philippines — Forecasters sounded alarms over a new storm headed for the Philippines Wednesday, even as workers repaired seawalls demolished by a typhoon that killed at least 21 people and left scores stranded in swamped communities.

MANILA, Philippines — Manila residents waded through waist-deep floodwaters and dodged flying debris Tuesday as a powerful typhoon struck the Philippines, killing at least 16 people and sending waves as tall as palm trees crashing over seawalls.

TOKYO — A powerful typhoon buffeted Tokyo with strong winds and rain Wednesday, halting trains and stranding tens of thousands of commuters as it barreled toward the tsunami-ravaged northeastern coast with its crippled nuclear plant.

Air drops bring aid to typhoon-isolated Japanese

TOKYO — Helicopters ferried supplies Tuesday to thousands of people still cut off by Japan's worst storm in 28 years. Typhoon Talas left at least 46 dead and 54 missing in a nation still struggling to recover from its devastating tsunami just six months ago.

Typhoon kills at least 15 as it passes Japan

TOKYO -- Heavy rains and mudslides from powerful Typhoon Talas killed at least 15 people in Japan as the storm moved northward Sunday past the country's western coast. At least 43 others are missing, local media said.

Evacuation orders and advisories were issued to 460,000 people in western and central Japan, Kyodo News agency reported.

Powerful typhoon bears down on China

BEIJING -- China warned residents and alerted emergency relief centers Friday to prepare for a powerful typhoon that was heading toward China's heavily populated eastern coast.

Typhoon Muifa is forecast to hit China late Saturday or early Sunday close to Shanghai, a commercial hub with a population of 23 million. Residents were warned to take precautions to prevent injuries and losses, the website of the Shanghai Daily newspaper reported.

CAUAYAN, Philippines -- A super typhoon that killed 13 people and flattened forests and crops in the northern Philippines dumped heavy rains on the capital Tuesday as it headed across the sea toward southern China.
