New bridge ready in North Salt Lake on I-15

Last Edit: Nov 27 2009 - 6:43am

NORTH SALT LAKE -- The final bridge replacement for the Interstate 15 ExpressLink project is near completion.

The U.S. 89 bridge over I-15 from North Salt Lake will be closed Monday and Tuesday to switch traffic onto a new bridge. The Beck Street on ramp to I-15 will also be closed. The U.S. 89 bridge will be reduced to one lane until January as crews finish final construction work.

As part of the project, the Utah Department of Transportation also replaced bridges at Beck Street, 1000 North and 800 North.

"They build the bridges to the side of the interstate, then put them into place," said UDOT Region One spokesman Vic Saunders. "Then, when we are ready, we demolish the old ones. That way, we keep them intact as long as possible so motorists can use them."

The $125 million ExpressLink project spans more than 4 miles and is scheduled for completion by next summer.

The project will increase capacity to I-15 by adding express lanes in each direction on I-15 from 500 North to the north I-215 ramp in Davis County.

In addition to Legacy Parkway, express lanes will help ease the commute between Salt Lake County and Davis County.

Saunders said express lanes will eventually stretch from Utah County to Ogden.

Last fall, UDOT completed a $52.3 million, 11-mile stretch from Farmington through Kaysville.

In addition to the work going on with the ExpressLink project, UDOT is currently adding express lanes between the Main Street interchange (Exit 330) and the Layton Hills Mall interchange (Exit 331), coinciding with the south Layton interchange project.
