WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- The Utah Department of Transportation is selling transponders to drivers of single-occupant vehicles who want to use express lanes.
High-occupancy vehicle lanes will become electronic in a month. The express lanes will remain free for carpoolers, motorcyclists, buses and vehicles with certain license plates.
But people who are the only ones in their cars and want to use the express lanes will have to pay.
The cost will vary depending on traffic volume and the location of the Interstate 15 HOV lane that's being traveled. The cost will range between 25 cents and $1. Electronic signs above the lanes will advertise the price in the different I-15 zones.
Drivers can sign up for the transponders at expresslanes.utah.gov. The transponders cost $8.75 each.
