Museum bill headed to Herbert’s desk

SALT LAKE CITY — A bill changing the makeup of the Utah State Museum Authority has cleared the Senate and is headed to the governor’s desk.

Under the bill, the board would include more members from Weber County, adding a representative from Union Station and one from Ogden.

HB 70 was sponsored by Rep. Jeremy Peterson, R-Ogden, and by Sen. Peter Knudson, R-Brigham City.

OGDEN — The Eccles Rail Center at Ogden’s Union Station has one of the world’s best collections of locomotives, switch engines, boxcars and cabooses, but recent vandalism has station officials looking for new ways to protect its history.

Mysterious treasures fill the basement at Union Station museum

OGDEN -- Union Station's railroad museum has railroad watches, lanterns, signs, bells and whistles in profusion.

But an Indian war bonnet from Little Big Horn? Tombstones? A shoe repair outfit?

Richard Couturier spent 13 years cataloging Union Station's very full basement, so little surprises him -- but even he shook his head at the war bonnet.

Model trains, Lego layout, tiny ride at fest mesmerizes kids

OGDEN — The eyes of adults and children followed the trains weaving their way through intricate model layouts of countryside, construction sites and metropolitan areas.

The 23rd annual Hostlers Model Railroad Festival was full steam ahead.

Layton High band wins battle after 'epic' performance

OGDEN -- "LHS! LHS! Mere Image! Mere Image!" the crowd shouted at the conclusion of the ninth annual Battle of the Bands.

The crowd roared after hearing that Layton High School's representative, Mere Image, had won the competition, although Fremont High's Stegosaurus had the crowd screaming "weekends, parties, late nights, ladies, rock 'n' roll."

Chlothel Gale Riddel, of Ogden, died of natural causes Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary. Union Pacific celebrating 150 years in Utah, across U.S.

This year, Union Pacific celebrates 150 years since President Abraham Lincoln signed it into existence. The story of the railroad company is tied closely to the modernization of the American West. People and freight began using the railroad to travel across the country 150 years ago and continue to do so to this day.

Public invited to watch or help in train restoration sessions

OGDEN -- The Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society will host its weekly work session Saturday in its ongoing project to restore a Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad steam locomotive to operational status.

Reception off for African officials

OGDEN -- A reception to honor a visiting Malian delegation of mayors and city managers, scheduled for Thursday at Union Station, has been canceled. The group was unable to obtain visas to allow them to enter the U.S.

OGDEN -- With the blast of a whistle, Union Pacific Railroad steam locomotive No. 844 rumbled into Union Station on Saturday to the delight of several hundred train enthusiasts.
