In time of national trial, the brave — or stupid — step forward

“Even though Mitt Romney has regained momentum as the front-runner in the GOP race with wins in Arizona and Michigan, many within the Republican Party are ready to pull the rip cord and find someone else.”

— news item

Mitt may have Utah locked up, but he’s looking dicey elsewhere. There are more questions about President Barack Obama’s birth. It may be time to throw my hat into the ring and save the nation from the loonies.

Or at least introduce a different loon. Whatever.

CCS runs low on stimulus funds to fight homelessness

OGDEN -- When it comes to fighting against homelessness, Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah is losing its strong arm.

The agency is spending the last of its American Recovery Act funds, sometimes referred to as stimulus money, that it has been using for a Homeless Prevention and Recovery Program (HPRP) and a Rapid Rehousing Program in Weber County.

The organization received about $1 million to help with this need and it will run out of that money next month.

Crushed car shows only one way many lives are vulnerable

The family whose car was crushed by a tree in the recent windstorm reminds me of a 1948 movie, "The Bicycle Thief."

The film is set in economically ravaged Rome after World War II. A man with a small family finally gets his bicycle out of the pawnshop so he can get a job.

"Without assistance, I know I would be out on the street," she said, the first gusts of the night's big snow storm blowing in behind her.

Hair today, gone tomorrow; let's put this hair piece to bed

Somehow, I pictured my victory being just a little bit more, well, you know ... victorious.

It's old news by now, but last Monday I narrowly defeated fellow columnist Charles Trentelman in our monthlong his-beard-vs.-my-hair contest, which raised a whopping $14,941 for the United Way of Northern Utah.

That's right, I won. So then, why do I feel like such a loser?

I'll tell you why: Because any number of disillusioned/alienated readers out there are now calling me a sell-out. And worse.
