Fresh-food donation drive set for Monday

OGDEN -- While Top of Utah residents are celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday, workers at United Way of Northern Utah are hoping they will think of others.

United Way will sponsor a fresh-food drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its offices at 2955 Harrison Blvd. Area residents are invited to drop off fresh fruits and vegetables inside or near the north doors of the building.

Donations up for some nonprofits

LOGAN — Some Cache County nonprofit organizations say donations have increased in 2011 despite a still-sluggish economy and national data that suggest charitable contributions are in overall decline.

Crushed car shows only one way many lives are vulnerable

The family whose car was crushed by a tree in the recent windstorm reminds me of a 1948 movie, "The Bicycle Thief."

The film is set in economically ravaged Rome after World War II. A man with a small family finally gets his bicycle out of the pawnshop so he can get a job.

On the hunt for turkeys:Local charities need food

LAYTON -- Karen Crow wouldn't have a Thanksgiving dinner if not for the turkey, drinks, bread and bowls in her grocery basket Friday.

She had just loaded it up at the East Layton Family Connection Center Food Bank and was on her way back to her two children at their assisted housing home in Clearfield. Her food budget had been cut in half when the father of one child stopped supporting her, she said.

"Without assistance, I know I would be out on the street," she said, the first gusts of the night's big snow storm blowing in behind her.

Hair today, gone tomorrow; let's put this hair piece to bed

Somehow, I pictured my victory being just a little bit more, well, you know ... victorious.

It's old news by now, but last Monday I narrowly defeated fellow columnist Charles Trentelman in our monthlong his-beard-vs.-my-hair contest, which raised a whopping $14,941 for the United Way of Northern Utah.

That's right, I won. So then, why do I feel like such a loser?

I'll tell you why: Because any number of disillusioned/alienated readers out there are now calling me a sell-out. And worse.

Weber County trust fund helps St. Anne's house the homeless

OGDEN -- St. Anne's Center can better help homeless families after receiving on Wednesday $100,000 from the Weber County Homeless Trust Fund.

This is the first money from the trust fund to help the homeless, said Bill Cochran, chairman of the fund's board of trustees. The fund was established in 2004, when Ogden sold a building at what is now Business Depot Ogden and set aside the proceeds of $1.3 million.

The great United Way hair battle of 2011 decided by a whisker

As I type this, it is 11 a.m. Monday. I do not know who has won the hair/beard United Way fundraising thing some idiot (columnist Mark Saal) dreamed up and another idiot (me) agreed to. This lets me write today's column in "real time," like some weird TV reality show.

Instead of getting booted off the island, the loser gets a free haircut or shave.

United Way Contest Video Conclusion

The results video of the United Way contest between Charles Trentleman and Mark Saal will be made available for streaming shortly. Check back here for updated information and to watch the video conclusion of the United Way fundraising event.

Update: It was decided by contributers that Charles Trentelman should be relieved of his beard. Apparently, Mark Saal decided to take advantage of the free haircut despite being the winner. Below is raw footage of the event.
