Urban Meyer

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer scripts a masterful first season

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fans at the Horseshoe turned the field into a sea of scarlet Saturday and why not? It was Michigan. And it was so much more.

What Ohio State’s football team has done over the last three months is nothing short of amazing. A 26-21 win over the Wolverines was icing swirled all over a perfect cake.

Meyer is both healthy and happy at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Urban Meyer swats aside the question about his health as if he were a cornerback batting down a wobbly pass.

"I'm taking care of myself. Thanks for asking," he said this week during Ohio State's last few days of spring workouts. "No, we're fine. That's kind of old news."

Then, turning to more pressing issues, he quickly added, "We just have to get our skill a little bit better here and we'll be ready to go."

In other words, personnel considerations take precedence over the coach's stress level.

Meyer's family will hold him to a different contract

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Urban Meyer pulled a pink slip out of the inside breast pocket of his suit coat, a small square of paper his wife Shelley called a contract that "takes precedent over any other one he signs."

Even though he might not have scribbled his signature in agreement yet.

It was the brainchild of the new Ohio State football coach's 21-year-old daughter Nicki, a volleyball player at Georgia Tech. Nicki Meyer mailed it to their home in Gainesville, Fla., before Shelley Meyer and their children sat down for a family discussion, firing questions at Urban about whether he could avoid the stress and his insistence on doing everything himself that prompted him to twice step down because of health issues at the University of Florida. He spent the past 11 months away from the game, working as an analyst for ESPN.

It's a contract about balance, about family priorities, about taking care of himself.
