Beacon installed to ensure safety of pedestrians crossing U.S. 89 in North Salt Lake

NORTH SALT LAKE -- A HAWK in the sky is making it safer for Adelaide Elementary School students to walk to school.

At the request of the school and North Salt Lake City, the Utah Department of Transportation recently installed a new High Intensity Activated Crosswalk, or "HAWK," beacon at the intersection of U.S. 89 and 800 West in North Salt Lake.

Driver injured in Thursday crash on Highway 89

LAYTON -- A driver had to be flown to a hospital Thursday morning after his car ran into the back of parked semitrailer on a rain-slick section of Highway 89 in Layton.

The accident happened about 10:15 a.m. near the off-ramp leading to State Road 193, said Layton Police Lt. Garret Atkin.

Students try to answer real-life questions in Davis science fair

LAYTON — Selected students enjoyed finding science in everyday aspects of their lives and presenting their results at Davis School District’s science fair Wednesday.

One of the most-viewed projects on display in the Davis Conference Center explored why animals cross the road in certain spots, sometimes leading to their deaths.

UDOT noise rules likely affect Top of Utah road projects

LAYTON -- Noise levels on state roads will be a little lower in the future.

The Utah Department of Transportation recently revised its noise-abatement regulations, adding new projects that will require noise studies and increasing the minimum noise-reduction levels that must be met for proposed noise walls.

One California man has died as a result of a crash involving at least 25 vehicles Saturday morning on westbound Interstate 84 near Mountain Green. The accident began when a double-tanker carrying butane gas jack-knifed on a bridge because of icy conditions. Two semis hit that truck, then at least 22 more vehicles, including another semi, hit the first three semis. Huge crash kills one, closes I-84

MOUNTAIN GREEN — Utah Highway Patrol expects to have a busy time reconstructing and investigating a massive Saturday morning accident involving 24 vehicles.

The accidents on westbound Interstate 84, beginning at Mile Marker 90, critically injured three people and led to one man accidentally slipping off a bridge to his death.

LAYTON -- Police say they don't believe texting was a factor in a serious motorcycle accident along U.S. 89 Tuesday night.

No helmet and excessive speed left the 20-year-old motorcyclist unconscious after the 11 p.m. accident.
