The U.S. Forest Service announced May 6, 2013 that it has chosen seven aircraft offered by contractors to be the next generation of firefighting aircraft, among them a DC-10. Awarding of the contracts must wait to see if any bidders file protests. The Forest Service has used the DC-10 when needed in the past, but the new contract would be the first time the agency has planned use of such a large aircraft for firefighting. Forest Service gets new wildfire tool in time for season

With much of the West mired in drought conditions heading into the summer, the U.S. Forest Service is preparing for what could be another damaging wildfire season. This year, firefighters will be armed with an updated tool to help them battle fires with the precision of special forces on the battlefield. The instrument, known as the “ Autonomous Modular Sensor,” or AMS, can help the Forest Service detect wildfires and conduct post-burn assessments.

Utah congressmen seek transfer of forest service land to Fruit Heights for cemetery

FRUIT HEIGHTS — Deep in the 100-acre woods is where Fruit Heights residents may lie — permanently.

Utah’s congressional representatives have introduced legislation that would transfer 100 acres of U.S. Forest Service land on the Davis County bench to Fruit Heights for use as a cemetery.

Fruit Heights currently has an agreement with neighboring Kaysville for burials, but because of the area’s significant population growth, the city has been notified its residents soon will no longer be able to be buried in the Kaysville cemetery.

When lightning sparks a wildfire deep in remote wilderness, U.S. Forest Service firefighters in recent years have been under orders to respond immediately, often trekking miles through steep, dense terrain with heavy gear to extinguish the blaze as quickly as possible. The agency’s policy to kill all fires, no matter how small or remote, was meant to decrease the threat of a spreading catastrophe in an increasingly parched, drought-stricken Western landscape. But in 2012 the forest service spent hundreds of millions over its budget, leading to a new approach to wildfire management in 2013. (AP Photo/Roswell Daily Record, Mark Wilson, File)

Forest Service may let more fires burn this summer

SAN FRANCISCO -- After coming in $400 million over budget following last year's busy fire season, the Forest Service is altering its approach and may let more fires burn instead of attacking every one.

Farmington warns residents about high fire danger

FARMINGTON — As Independence Day and Pioneer Day near, the Farmington Fire Department is taking a proactive approach to keeping the city and its residents safe during fireworks season.

Fire Chief Guido Smith said that because 2012 has been very dry and temperatures in recent weeks have been hotter than normal, fire safety this year is extremely important.

As part of its safety action, the city council recently approved a new fireworks restriction area in the city. Fireworks are restricted in Farmington in areas east of North Compton Road, 100 East, 200 East and 350 East, as well as in Woodland Park.
