Hatch laments failure of his balanced budget amendment

OGDEN -- Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Wednesday's defeat of the latest version of his constitutional amendment to balance the federal budget was expected, but there's no other way to bring federal spending under control.

Donald (Larry) Dixon

Iran says it shot down unmanned US spy plane

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s armed forces have shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country’s eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

Air Force Airman Cody K. Bishop graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Bishop earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Maila Bishop of Woods Cross. He is a 2010 graduate of Woods Cross High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Jacob R. Coburn graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Coburn is the son of Michelle Coburn of Midvale. He is a 2007 graduate of Northridge High School.

Kent A. Hall

Kent A. Hall, 77, of Pleasant View, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Pleasant View 7th Ward Chapel, 900 W. Pleasant View Drive. Afghan assembly endorses talks with US on troops

KABUL, Afghanistan — President Hamid Karzai received a resounding endorsement Saturday from a traditional national assembly to negotiate a security agreement that could keep a U.S. military presence in Afghanistan past 2014, when most international forces are to have left. The size of the force is subject to negotiations but a future deal could keep thousands of American troops here for years.

The Top of Utah honors those who served

OGDEN -- They came in droves and small somber groups to cemeteries, parks, and schools in honor of the nation's military.

Weathered World War II veterans rubbed shoulders with fresh-faced, flag-toting Boy Scouts while proud parents silently prayed for the safe return of soldier sons and daughters serving in far-flung battle zones.

That star-spangled scene played out again and again at Veterans Day ceremonies held Friday throughout the Top of Utah.

Top of Utah veterans receive top honors

SALT LAKE CITY — A trio of Top of Utah veterans were honored Friday with the highest award given by the Utah Department of Veterans Affairs.

Casey Kunimura, Norm Nelson and Bob Ramos each received a Utah Distinguished Service to Veterans Award in a ceremony at the Utah State Capitol.

Kunimura lives in North Ogden and served in the Army during World War II.

Japanese-American vets to be honored

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's Japanese-American Veterans from the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service will be honored at 10:30 a.m. today by Gov. Gary R. Herbert.
