USU faculty member Randy Lewis' work involves introducing spider DNA into goat embryos, so as adults, the females give milk containing spider web substance, a strong, light material he is developing for scientific and commercial use. USU celebrates 2 sets of twins -- the first spider goat clones in Utah

LOGAN — Ready for an amazing spider-related sequel? Well, you’ll have to wait until July to see Spider-Man in theaters, but two Utah State University faculty members already have welcomed two sets of cloned spider goat twins.

Spider goats, as scientists informally call them, are goats that have been modified as embryos to introduce a spider gene that allows the female goats to produce a milk containing spider silk. The strong silk substance, not in web form, is then isolated and purified before use.

Education, workforce development critical for future of Utah

“At 30, we are impatient that we haven’t made more progress toward achieving our potential. At 40, we are nervously aware that the opportunities to achieve our potential are slipping away. But at 50, if we have the courage to look in the mirror, we face the crushing realization that there is no unachieved potential left, that what we have done is our potential: pass the Hemlock.”

The decision by the Davis School District to adopt language and cultural immersion programs as part of the curriculum has generated some hesitancy to support the programs.

In countering this hesitancy, the changing dynamics of the business world has given us a keen perspective on the next generation’s fundamental preparation to be competitive.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Education and business leaders gathered at the Utah State Capitol on Thursday in hopes of drawing attention and additional funding to USTAR, the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative.

Weber State is doing it right, says USTAR executive director

OGDEN -- Weber State University has proven to be a great matchmaker when it comes to the business of pairing professors with industry, according to USTAR.

The Utah Science, Technology and Research initiative, a partnership among the state of Utah, state universities and private businesses, distributes money from federal grants that help university professors work with private business to create new products or product innovations that, in turn, bring money and jobs to Utah.

The largest portion of the grant money goes to the University of Utah and Utah State University. But among the other regional colleges vying for remaining grant funds, Weber State has earned more than any other Utah university competing.

USU develops geomatics technology for Utah company

SALT LAKE CITY - No machetes needed for this jungle survey. Thanks to technology developed at Utah State University, Tridex Solutions, a Salt Lake City-based company in the geomatics market, has begun a comprehensive 3D survey of the west central African country of Gabon.

After a successful pilot project in January that provided 3D renderings of nearly 70,000 hectares, this week Tridex launched a more ambitious imaging project to map 1 million hectares (nearly 2.5 million acres).
