Idaho edges Utah State 57-54 in late-night WAC play

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Stephen Madison hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to help Idaho beat the Utah State Aggies 57-54 Saturday night.

Preston Medlin had a chance to tie the game with five seconds remaining, but missed short and the Aggies (10-10, 2-3) were forced to foul to end the game.

Madison's 3-point shot was part of a 10-1 run with just under four minutes remaining to help Idaho (10-9, 3-2 WAC) erase a nine-point deficit.

Djim Bandoumel came off the bench and led Idaho with 16 points and Deremy Geiger added 12 points. Bandoumel scored 11 points in the second half to help the Vandals in the win. Idaho's bench scored 25 points.

Idaho forced 16 Aggie turnovers and had eight steals in the contest.

Conference setback

Ohio fries Aggies' bowl dreams

BOISE, Idaho -- Tyler Tettleton's fourth-down, 14-yard pass to LaVon Brazill was a touchdown, giving Ohio their first lead of the game with just 37 seconds left to play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

No, wait: Brazill's knee was down two feet short of the goal line.

Then the version was that Brazill fumbled his own reception before recovering for the score.

Andersen signs one-year extension at USU

BOISE, Idaho -- Utah State's first trip to a postseason bowl in 14 years has earned coach Gary Andersen another one-year contract extension.

School officials announced the deal Thursday, two days before the Aggies (7-5) square off against Ohio in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise.

"Gary has built a foundation that gives our football program an opportunity to sustain success," USU athletic director Scott Barnes said. "It takes time to build a football program and after three years, Gary's leadership has put us ahead of schedule in many aspects."

Aggies lose Jardine for the rest of the year

LOGAN -- Like any good coach, Stew Morrill never wants to give up on the game, or the season.

But with the prospect of not having star big man Brady Jardine for the rest of the season, Morrill is realistic.

The Aggies host Utah Valley at the Smith Spectrum this evening. USU has lost a pair of games, at home vs. Denver followed by a loss at Pacific.

Aggies Turbin, Wagner headline All-WAC team

DENVER -- While Western Athletic Conference champion Louisiana Tech led the way with seven first-team all-WAC honorees, the league's coaches recognized Utah State's impact on the season, naming USU's Robert Turbin the league's offensive player of the year, and handing out three additional first team honors to the Aggies.

The awards were voted on by the WAC's eight head coaches.

Turbin was named the offensive player of the year, Louisiana Tech's Adrien Cole earned defensive player of the year honors, and Nevada's Cody Fajardo was named the freshman of the year. Louisiana Tech's Sonny Dykes was voted the WAC's coach of the year.

Rivera leads Pacific past Utah State

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Ross Rivera scored a career-high 15 points, and Pacific made Bob Thomason the most successful coach in Big West Conference history with a 65-57 victory over Utah State on Saturday night.

Thomason, in his 24th season coaching his alma mater, recorded his 406th win at Pacific, one more than Jerry Tarkanian had at UNLV and Long Beach State. Thomason and Tarkanian are the only Big West coaches with more than 300 victories.

The Tigers (3-3) recorded their first win this season over a Division I opponent. Pacific, which returned no starters from last year, used its sixth different starting lineup in six games.

College football: USU wins Aggie showdown in N.M.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Utah State keeps the football fans in their seats until the final gun.

Adam Kennedy threw three touchdown passes, the last to Matt Austin with 35 seconds left, as Utah State defeated New Mexico State 24-21 on Saturday.

The 8-yard pass capped a 13-play, 83-yard drive. Kennedy and Austin collaborated on another scoring pass, with 1:39 left in the first half, to give Utah State (7-5, 6-2 in WAC) a 14-7 lead.

College basketball: Stew's Aggies heat up from long range

POCATELLO, Idaho -- Preston Medlin scored 26 points, hitting 8 of 11 from behind the arc, to lead Utah State to a 75-62 win over Idaho State on Saturday night.

Adam Thoseby added four 3-pointers and 16 points for the Aggies (3-2), who were a combined 13 of 19 (68 percent) from long range. Idaho State (1-4) hit just three of its 18 3-point attempts.

Melvin Morgan led Idaho State with 24 points and was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. Chase Grabau scored 12 points.

LOGAN -- Utah State officials say the Aggies' season-opening basketball game against Brigham Young has officially sold out.

Outside the limelight is alright for USU's Johansen

LOGAN -- Through his time at Utah State, wide receiver Josh Johansen has given it his all as a part of the Aggie football team. Even though he has seen action in just one game of his college career, he shows up to every practice and works hard.

"It's all for the love of football," Johansen said. "It's been a part of my life for so long that I couldn't not have it."

Johansen, a senior from Kaysville, played for Davis High School. He lettered in three seasons during his high school career and was named to the all-region second team. When it came time to go to college, the game wasn't something he was ready to give up.
