'Fablehaven' authors taps into Ogden students' creativity

OGDEN — It felt a little like “The Price is Right” at Mound Fort Junior High School on Thursday morning, as best-selling young-adult author Brandon Mull took answers from the audience on creative ways a character could travel to another world.

Three students lined up in the front of the auditorium as he showed examples of how to create a story. Students took suggestions from their peers amid laughter and giggles at some of the ideas.

“A shower!” one student yelled.

Utah author reinvigorates quest genre

"BEYONDERS: A WORLD WITHOUT HEROES." By Brandon Mull. Aladdin/Simon & Schuster. 456 pages. $19.99.

For decades, kids have been inadvertently stumbling into alternate realities through children's literature. In "The Chronicles of Narnia," it was a wardrobe that served as the portal. With "Beyonders: A World Without Heroes," it's the yawning jaws of a hippo.

This intriguing beginning leads to an even more imaginative quest in the kickoff to a new fantasy trilogy from Utah author Brandon Mull, who wrote the best-selling young-adult series "Fablehaven," which chronicled a pair of siblings who learn their grandparents are taking care of magical creatures in a secret wildlife park.
