Free talk to look at Nauvoo, Battalion

OGDEN -- The Ogden Family History Center will host a talk on "History of Nauvoo 1840s, the Mormon Battalion and Settlement of the Great Basin" at 10 a.m. Saturday at the center, 539 24th St.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Richard Sadler, professor of history at Weber State University and co-author of "Ogden, Junction City" and other works. His talk is free.

Following the talk, two workshops will be held, one on finding your ancestors who lived in Nauvoo and another on the Mormon Battalion's help in settling the Ogden area.

Weber Reads the Founders and Their Documents continues at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday with "Universal Declaration of Human Rights," featuring WSU political science professor Nancy Haanstad. The free event will be held in the Stewart Library's Hetzel-Hoellein Room, Weber State University, 3848 Harrison Blvd., Ogden.

* Brigham City Library continues its "Rule of Law" reading series at 7 p.m. Thursday with a discussion of "America's First Woman Lawyer: The Biography of Myra Bradwell" by Jane M. Friedman. Bradwell applied to practice law in 1869 in her home state of Illinois and was denied. Instead she became a legal journalist, publishing and editing the influential Chicago Legal News. Friedman writes that Bradwell's achievements have been overlooked because her disagreements with feminist Susan B. Anthony led Anthony to exclude Bradwell from her definitive "History of Woman Suffrage." Using her journal as a forum, Bradwell successfully agitated for judicial reform and women's rights, particularly the right of married women to enter the professions.

Weber State University history professor Kathryn MacKay leads the free discussion at the library, 26 E. Forest St., Brigham City.

Webers Reads The Founders and Their Documents continues with a readers theater event by Weber State University's Department of Performing Arts at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hetzel-Hoellein Room of the Stewart Library, 3848 Harrison Blvd, WSU, Ogden. This is a free event.

* During a presentation this week at Weber State University, Eric Swedin, a WSU associate professor of history, will analyze what could have happened if the Cuban Missile Crisis had led to war.

Swedin is the author of seven books, including "When Angels Wept: A What-if History of the Cuban Missile Crisis." The free event will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the WSU Lindquist Alumni Center, 3848 Harrison Blvd., Ogden.

'Fablehaven' authors taps into Ogden students' creativity

OGDEN — It felt a little like “The Price is Right” at Mound Fort Junior High School on Thursday morning, as best-selling young-adult author Brandon Mull took answers from the audience on creative ways a character could travel to another world.

Three students lined up in the front of the auditorium as he showed examples of how to create a story. Students took suggestions from their peers amid laughter and giggles at some of the ideas.

“A shower!” one student yelled.

Brandon Mull launches 'Rebellion' at big party

Highland novelist Brandon Mull is setting out on another whirlwind author adventure as he launches "Beyonders: Seeds of Rebellion."

Mull, the author of the best-selling "Fablehaven" series, will launch the book, geared toward young teenagers, at a free party and show Tuesday at Cottonwood High School in Murray.

* Utah authors from the Eden Writers Group will sign and discuss copies of their book "Tales From Huntsville, Eden, Liberty And Beyond" (DMT Publishing, $10.99) noon-4 p.m. Saturday at Hastings, 340 E. 525 North, Harrisville. This is a free event.

* New Mexico author Philip Connors reads from and signs "Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout" at 7 p.m. Monday.

Local author will share tricks for research

BRIGHAM CITY — A Utah author will speak in Brigham City about the research tricks he has learned from researching the West.

Michael Zimmer, who has published eight novels, will speak 7 p.m. March 20 at Brigham City Library, 26 E. Forest St.

Zimmer will cover a wide range of topics, such as starting a fire with flint and steel and common misconceptions about Old West firearms, with an emphasis on avoiding familiar movie stereotypes.

The author will sign books immediately after the event.

Pam Houston

Author Pam Houston will be busy on trip to Ogden

Taking a break from her book tour, author Pam Houston will be popping into Ogden this week to coach writing students at Weber State University and also to visit with the public regarding her new book, "Contents May Have Shifted."

Houston, who lives on a ranch in Colorado, is the author of two collections of linked short stories, "Cowboys Are My Weakness" and "Waltzing the Cat." She also wrote the novel "Sight Hound" and a collection of essays called "A Little More About Me." All were published by W.W. Norton.

Houston is an author who gathers her inspiration from her surroundings.
