Regents approve 5 percent tuition increase for Weber State

SALT LAKE CITY — The State Board of Regents on Friday approved Weber State University’s request for a 5 percent increase in tuition, along with increases for the eight other public, state-funded colleges and universities.

Increases take effect summer term, which for Weber State begins in late May.

“Higher education saw a budget increase from the Legislature this year for the first time since 2008,” said Bill Sederburg, Utah Commissioner of Higher Education. “Fortunately, the Legislature made support for higher education a priority this year, but in order to hold funding per student constant, we still need to make up for lack of funding in previous years.”

SANDY -- Regents have approved tuition hikes across Utah colleges and universities that will raise prices an average of 5.6 percent for undergraduates taking 15 credit hours.

Weber State seeks 5 percent tuition increase

OGDEN — Weber State University will seek permission from the Board of Regents to increase student tuition and fees in time for the summer semester.

If approved, the 5 percent increase in tuition and 4.2 percent increase in student fees would cost the average full-time undergraduate resident an additional $110.54 per semester. The average full-time undergraduate nonresident would pay an additional $303.35 per semester. Full time is calculated as 15 credit hours.

“We have tried very hard to keep tuition increases modest at Weber State University,” said Norm Tarbox, WSU vice president for administrative services. “We are the least-expensive public university in the state of Utah, and if these recommended increases are approved, we will still be the least-expensive public university in the state of Utah.”

Legislature briefs: Bill would drop nonvoters from registration rolls

SALT LAKE CITY -- The House of Representatives will be asked to consider a bill that would clean up voter registration rolls in the state by removing people who fail to vote in two consecutive elections, among other provisions.

HB 253 attempts to address low voter turnout in the Beehive State, says its sponsor, Rep. Kraig Powell, R-Heber City.

It would amend the state election code to require removal of those who have registered to vote in other states, as well as those convicted of crimes that make them ineligible to vote.

OGDEN -- Why will the health science building cross the road?

It's no joke. It's part of a Weber State University master plan, approved Friday by the State Board of Regents.

OGDEN -- The Weber State University Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved a proposal to restructure and rename two of its departments.

The proposal will go before the Utah Board of Regents within the next few months. Board of Regents approval is required before any changes can go into effect.

If the proposal is approved, Weber State's Department of Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology will become the Department of Engineering, offering bachelor's degrees and pre-engineering programs. The WSU Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering would become the Department of Engineering Technology and would take over a degree program called Electronics Engineering Technology, formerly part of the CEET department.
