SALT LAKE CITY -- Advertisements on the sides of school buses would be permitted by a bill passed by the Utah House.
Republican Rep. Jim Bird of West Jordan says the advertisements will provide an additional source of revenue for schools.
Bird amended the bill during House debate on Tuesday to restrict the size of the ads and prohibit them on the front or back of a bus
Several representatives spoke against the bill because of safety concerns.
But Bird says ads on public transit buses in Utah have never caused an accident.
He says advertising already generates revenue for school districts with signs in gymnasiums and around athletic fields.
The bill passed the House 42-30. It now moves to the Senate.
