SALT LAKE CITY -- A legislative committee has held a bill that would relax gun laws and allow any resident not prohibited from carrying a gun to possess a concealed firearm.
Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, said House Bill 129 does not change who can possess a firearm, such as barring those who have a criminal background.
The House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Standing Committee voted unanimously to hold the bill after a heated debate Thursday morning.
Opponents raised safety concerns because of the lack of required training for gun owners, including how to safely operate their firearm.
Wimmer said he will discuss concerns with opponents of the bill, look into making changes and request another committee hearing for the bill next week.
