SALT LAKE CITY -- Pedestrians no longer can legally walk along interstate highways.
House Bill 162, sponsored by Rep. Lee Perry, R-Perry, was unanimously approved by the Senate on Thursday. It now goes to the governor's office for a signature.
Perry, a lieutenant with the Utah Highway Patrol, said it came to his attention that there has been no statutory code making it illegal to walk along the freeway. It has been illegal to hitchhike, but not to walk.
It will now be a class C misdemeanor to walk along the interstates, except in an emergency.
