SOUTH JORDAN -- Utah's newest state senator is a member of one of the state's most prominent families.
Republican Aaron Osmond was chosen this week by delegates to replace Republican Sen. Chris Buttars, who retired at the end of the 2011 legislative session.
Osmond is the nephew of singers Donny and Marie Osmond.
A real estate investor, he was elected after two rounds of voting, defeating nine other candidates, the Deseret News reported.
Aaron Osmond says he will focus on helping small businesses by reducing government bureaucracy.
In 2009, Osmond lost a race for South Jordan mayor.
