Antelope Island sees an increase in visitors, revenue

ANTELOPE ISLAND — Unusually warm weather, international and national marketing efforts and the decision by some families to vacation locally because of a sluggish economy has Antelope Island State Park attendance and revenues on the rise.

Visitation for 2012 is up 6 percent through Aug. 31, compared to the same time last year, according to Utah State Parks Communication Coordinator Deena Loyola.

This year’s visitor count through August is 216,243, compared to 204,000 visitors for the same time period in 2011, Loyola said.

7 to tour 43 state parks on off-highway vehicles, public trails

The second annual Utah “border-to-border” ride will begin Saturday morning at the Utah/Idaho border near Bear Lake State Park.

This year, instead of the traveling in an air-conditioned recreation vehicle, the group will tour Utah’s state parks from border to border on off-highway vehicles.

Antelope Island mule deer/sheep hunt is under way

ANTELOPE ISLAND -- The state's first hunt for mule deer and bighorn sheep in Antelope Island State Park began Tuesday with no fanfare, ribbon cutting or balloons.

The hunters who had obtained permits through a competitive bid auction to hunt one mule deer and one bighorn sheep were tucked away behind locked gates, where they could not be reached for comment.

Two people doing film work for the hunting parties remained outside the restricted area but were reluctant to talk to the media because of public opposition to the island hunts.

Without funding, Utah may close some state parks

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah officials are warning lawmakers that some state parks will close if they don't get additional funding and more flexibility with fees.

State Parks Director Mary Tullius says the agency needs about $3 million in next year's budget to maintain existing operations.

Tullius said during a legislative committee Wednesday the agency is looking at other options to generate revenue and save money, such as privatizing a golf course.

Republican Rep. Evan Vickers of Cedar City says he is concerned historical or cultural parks will be threatened because they aren't self-sustaining.

Vickers says parks providing an educational benefit should be considered valuable even if they don't make money.

State Director of Natural Resources Michael Styler says parks should be allowed to increase fees during busy periods to boost earnings.

Davis County looks at managing Jordan River OHV Park

FARMINGTON — The Jordan River Off-Highway Vehicle Park is roughly 170 acres of dirt bike heaven.

The question is, does Davis County want the responsibility of managing a park that captures on average $100,000 a year in revenue but costs $295,000 annually to operate?

State Parks Northern Region Manager Jeff Rasmussen and the Davis County Budget Committee met Monday in an informational meeting to begin exploring that question.
