Utah Symphony performance at WSU canceled due to storm

OGDEN — Due to the evening rush-hour blizzard conditions on Thursday, the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association was forced to cancel the Utah Symphony’s performance of Sibelius’ violin concerto and other works at Weber State University’s Browning Center.

SALT LAKE CITY — The longest-tenured member of the Utah Symphony is calling it quits.

Lockhart keeps tight Utah connection

Even though Keith Lockhart no longer regularly appears hereabouts, baton in hand, as he did when he was the music director for the Utah Symphony, the journeyman conductor is not exactly resting on his laurels.

Lockhart stays busy enough these days with his regular gig conducting the Boston Pops. In fact, he had 41 concerts in December with the famed orchestra, helping Bostonians celebrate the holidays.

"It was quite a run, but you make hay while the sun shines," said Lockhart, calling from Boston last week, as he braced for a blizzard that was advancing on the city.

Karen Brookens, assistant professor of music at Weber State University, joins pops conductor Jerry Steichen and the Utah Symphony for “The Polar Express” Monday at the Browning Center on the Ogden campus.

‘Polar Express’ pulls into WSU

“The Polar Express” is a rather new addition to the holiday canon of literature. The book, written by Chris Van Allsburg, came to life in 1985, and the motion-capture animation movie arrived at the station in 2004.

However, the story of a boy who gets to ride with Santa on Christmas Eve has already become something of a beloved classic, one that Utah Symphony principal pops conductor Jerry Steichen wanted to bring to life. He does, with two shows this week in Salt Lake City and one, courtesy of the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association, next week in Ogden.

Jerry Steichen conducts the Utah Symphony Thursday in "Holiday Celebration with Jerry!" at Weber State University in Ogden.

Steichen balances tradition with surprises

Jerry Steichen likes holiday traditions. He tends to get together with his extended family of 28 -- nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters, mom and dad.

He also enjoys planning a holiday show or two as principal pops conductor for the Utah Symphony. One of his favorite things about it is the challenging nature of bringing both tradition and fresh elements to the story.

Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West and Pat Walshe as Nikko, the head monkey, in "The Wizard of Oz." The Utah Symphony presents "Oz With Orchestra" Thursday at Weber State University in Ogden.

Symphony goes over the rainbow

One reason it still enthralls today is the timeless Harold Arlen score. Songs like "Over the Rainbow" and "If I Only Had a Brain" are touchstones of a golden era of film music.

The Utah Symphony plays along with the movie and the Judy Garland vocal tracks, bringing a live element to the show on Thursday in Ogden, and on Nov. 12 and 13 in Salt Lake City.

"It is a classic, and a hot box-office ticket," said David Cho, who is conducting the symphony for the show. "And it is a challenge for me as a conductor, as I have to follow this thing called a clock."
