Pac-12, Mountain West team up on officiating

SAN FRANCISCO — The Pac-12 and Mountain West conferences are teaming up to collaborate on men’s and women’s basketball officiating, putting longtime Mountain West coordinator Bobby Dibler in charge of the programs and managing a pool of top national and regional officials.

In announcing the officiating alliance Friday, the conferences said that the West Coast Conference, Big West Conference and Western Athletic Conference also will take part in the leagues’ training programs.

Steve Smith

Panthers’ Smith: I want to play 15-16 seasons

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Steve Smith said the competition at the Panthers wide receiver position this year is “cut throat,” and the 13-year veteran receiver plans to stick around to see how it shakes out.

Smith, 33, told The Associated Press on Thursday he wants “to play 15 or 16 years” in the NFL, which would take him through the 2015 or 2016 season. Smith said he’s drawn inspiration from former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber, who retired earlier this month after 16 seasons in the league.

“Physically I feel great right now,” said Smith, who said he battled through knee injuries last season for the first time in his career.

Star Lotulelei

Agent: Top pick Lotulelei signs with Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The agent for first-round draft pick Star Lotulelei says his client has signed a four-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Financial terms were not released. The deal includes a team option for a fifth season.

Bruce Tollner says Lotulelei, the 14th overall pick in the NFL draft, is “extremely excited to officially become a Panther.”

Alex Smith

Alex Smith already becoming leader of Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It hasn’t taken long for Alex Smith to become the leader of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The weight of the franchise was foisted upon his shoulders from the very second word leaked out that former No. 1 draft pick would be sent from the San Francisco 49ers to the Chiefs during a topsy-turvy offseason.

If he wasn’t considered the leader in the huddle then, he certainly is now, as the Chiefs toil away in summer-like heat during the first full week of voluntary practices.

A quick survey of his teammates will confirm it.

Giacoletti brings long-term vision to Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa — Ray Giacoletti watched with pride as the Utah team he had constructed reached the 2009 NCAA tournament.

He was never given the chance to see what he could do with those Utes.

Giacoletti’s lone high-profile head coaching job ended after just three seasons in 2007, as he resigned following back-to-back losing seasons. But Giacoletti saw Utah’s run two years later — it included 24 wins and a Mountain West conference title — as proof that his vision for building a program could work.

Eagles take Utah DE Joe Kruger in 7th round

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles have selected Utah defensive end Joe Kruger with the first of their three seventh-round picks.

Kruger was chosen Saturday with the 212th overall pick. He’s listed at 6-foot-6 and 269 pounds.

Panthers select Utah DT Star Lotulelei with 14th pick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman has been to six Super Bowls during his 25-plus years in the NFL and is convinced the only way to reach that summit is to assemble a great defensive line rotation.

So it came as no surprise that Gettleman got one of the “hog mollies” — his term of endearment for big linemen — he so coveted entering the NFL draft.

The Panthers selected Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei with the 14th overall pick Thursday night in Gettleman’s first NFL draft with his new team.

Ziggy, Star have the names, but do they have NFL game?

They’re being mocked and it’s putting on a smile on the faces of football fans all over Utah.

Lotulelei won’t be among the two dozen players attending the NFL draft in person in New York. He declined the invitation so he could be with 50 to 100 family members and friends at his home south of Salt Lake City.

Lotulelei has star potential despite heart scare

SALT LAKE CITY — He has the perfect name, even if it belies his humble, soft-spoken nature.

Now that concerns about his heart function have been alleviated, defensive tackle Star Lotulelei is ready to make the jump from former furniture mover to NFL first-round pick.

“I think he will have a long career in the NFL,” said Gil Brandt, NFL.com’s personnel evaluator. “ls he going to have a Pro Bowl type of career? If he becomes a consistent player.”

Drexel women beat Utah 46-43 to win WNIT title

PHILADELPHIA — Hollie Mershon climbed to the top of the ladder, grabbed the pair of scissors and, for one of the first times in her college basketball career, looked unsure of what to do.

But after a few glances around the court, the Drexel senior settled on the piece of the net she wanted to cut off and then raised her arms toward the crowd in triumph.

Allow her to savor the moment: one of the best players in Drexel women’s basketball history had just led her school to its first postseason championship.
