Utes' strong start fades away as Buffaloes earn Pac-12 win

BOULDER, Colo. — Colorado leaned on a couple of veterans to help make up for the loss of freshman star Josh Scott, who missed a game for the first time this season after suffering a concussion.

Senior Sabatino Chen and junior Jeremy Adams combined for 21 points and Colorado pulled away to beat Utah 60-50 on Thursday night.

“Sabatino played terrific defensively and in getting the ball in the lane and making some things happen,” Colorado coach Tad Boyle of Chen, who had 12 points. “He only had one assist but he made a lot of plays that led to a play that led to a basket. Jeremy Adams I thought played some critical minutes in both halves. Both those guys stepped up, and that’s what you have to have when you have a guy like Josh go down.”

Erickson vows to bring up-tempo style to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — The latest stop on Dennis Erickson’s coaching tour of the Pac-12 brings him to Utah as co-offensive coordinator, where his marching orders are simple: help the Utes score more touchdowns.

The 65-year-old Erickson, who won two national titles as Miami coach and has been a head coach at three Pac-12 schools, intends to implement an up-tempo offense that is trending throughout college football.

“If you look at probably the top 10 offenses in college football, all of them run 75, 80 plays,” Erickson said at a news conference Wednesday. “Well, you can’t run 75, 80 plays if you’re in the huddle.”

Mark Lyons helps No. 9 Arizona edge Utah 68-64

SALT LAKE CITY — Arizona coach Sean Miller shuffled his lineup hoping his team would rebound from its worst loss of the season.

It worked, although Sunday’s 68-64 victory over Utah at the Huntsman Center was hardly easy for the ninth-ranked Wildcats, who blew a 13-point second-half lead but finished strong to avoid a third straight defeat.

“I don’t think we played any different (down the stretch),” said freshman Brandon Ashley, who was benched in favor of senior Kevin Parrom. “I just think we picked up our intensity. We saw that we needed to stop messing around and fight.”

Washburn leads Utah rally over Arizona State

SALT LAKE CITY -- Six weeks ago, Jason Washburn had one of the best games of his college career but it wasn't enough against Arizona State as Utah lost in overtime.

In the rematch Wednesday, he stepped it up offensively, matching his career high with 26 points and leading Utah to a 60-55 victory.

Oregon State cruises past Utah for 82-64 victory

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Joe Burton says he doesn’t pay much attention to his stats. The Oregon State senior post is concerned only about the wins.

Burton filled up the box score Wednesday night, helping the Beavers pull away from Utah in the second half for an 82-64 win.

Burton finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists as Oregon State (12-11, 2-8 Pac-12) recorded its highest point total in a conference game this season against a Utah team that was allowing only 60.9 points per game.

Utah stuns Washington 74-65 for first Pac-12 road victory

SEATTLE — Jason Washburn scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half, Brandon Taylor added a career-high 19 off the bench and Utah won its first Pac-12 road game in two seasons as a member of the conference with a stunning 74-65 win over Washington on Saturday night.

The Utes (9-9, 1-5 Pac-12) were winless in conference play this season and having last won a Pac-12 game on Feb. 25, 2012 against Stanford, used hot shooting and a smart defensive plan to take down the Huskies and hand Washington its first conference loss. Washington was trying to start 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 1984.
