PULLMAN, Wash. — Mike Ladd had 22 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead five Washington State players scoring in double figures in a 75-65 win against Utah on Wednesday night.

Broncos OC McCoy agrees to become Chargers coach

SAN DIEGO — Mike McCoy is the new head coach of the San Diego Chargers.

The team has scheduled a 3 p.m. MST news conference Tuesday to introduce McCoy, who had been the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

USC Trojans rout Utes in Pac-12 play

SALT LAKE CITY — J.T. Terrell scored 14 points and Southern California defeated Utah 76-59 on Saturday to snap a string of 14 straight road losses.

Dewayne Dedmon had 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Trojans (7-10, 2-2), while Jio Fontan and Byron Wesley scored 13 points each at the Huntsman Center.

The Utes (8-8, 0-4) were within 50-42 on Jarred DuBois’ 3-pointer with 10:26 remaining. USC went on a 7-0 run, led by Dedmon’s put-back dunk off a missed free throw.

Utes rally, but can’t catch Bruins

SALT LAKE CITY — Larry Drew II scored 12 points, including a driving layup to beat the shot clock with 9 seconds remaining, and UCLA held off Utah 57-53 on Thursday night.

The Utes, who were led by Cedric Martin’s 12 points, had two chances to take the lead in the final minutes, but Glen Dean missed wide-open 3-point attempts.

Washburn, Utah getting noticed for right moves

SALT LAKE CITY — The nasty chants that rained down on Jason Washburn during Utah’s Pac-12 opener last week were hard to ignore.

Instead of being insulted, the Utes’ 6-foot-10 center took them as a sign that his play was being noticed.

Considering how far Utah had fallen off the college basketball map last season during a 6-25 campaign, the razzing almost felt good.

FARMINGTON — A University of Utah football linebacker was sentenced for his role in a road rage incident that left a 20-year-old man unconscious.

No. 3 Arizona holds on for 60-57 win over plucky Utah squad

TUCSON, Ariz. — Utah guard Jarred DuBois took the inbound pass, turned and flipped a last-second 3-pointer toward the rim. The ball hit iron, bounced high off the backboard and again caught a piece of the rim before falling harmlessly to the floor.

Given a second straight chance to pull out a close road victory, the Utes came up short again.

Coming off an overtime loss in its conference opener, Utah made it two straight agonizing losses in the desert by falling 60-57 to No. 3 Arizona 60-57 on Saturday.

Sun Devils hold off Utes in overtime

TEMPE, Ariz. —Arizona State freshman Jahii Carson sank a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime, then made a driving layup with 35 seconds left for what proved to be the game-winner in the Sun Devils’ 55-54 victory over Utah in the teams’ Pac-12 opener on Wednesday night.

Utah DL Kruger seeks to join brother in NFL

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah defensive end Joe Kruger has opted not to return for his senior season and instead will enter the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound junior played in 37 of 38 games for the Utes from 2010 to 2012, with 14 starts. He led Utah with six sacks this season and had eight tackles for loss.

Utes to test selves once more before Pac-12 play

SALT LAKE CITY — While Larry Krystkowiak’s Utah Utes have grown by leaps and bounds in his second season at the helm, there are still plenty of question marks about the squad.

The improved defense, sharing the ball better, a solid road win are all positives as Utah closes out the 2012 portion of his season tonight by hosting NAIA College of Idaho.

Cal State Northridge stuns Utah 76-71 at Huntsman Center

SALT LAKE CITY — Landon Drew scored 14 of his career-high 19 points in the second half to help Cal State Northridge rally from 19 points down and stun Utah, 76-71, on Friday night at the Huntsman Center.

Stephan Hicks had 19 points and nine rebounds as the Matadors (8-3) scored 19 points off Utah’s 15 turnovers and held the Utes (7-3) to 22 percent shooting in the second half.

Bench scoring helps Utah rally to beat SMU 62-53

SALT LAKE CITY — Justin Seymour and Brandon Taylor have been watching most of Utah’s games from the end of the bench.

Against SMU, the two freshman guards found themselves playing key roles in Utah’s 62-53 win on Tuesday night at the Huntsman Center. 

Ex-Ute Manny Fernandez to enter Dolphins’ Walk of Fame

DAVIE, Fla. — Standing side by side were two men who both played defensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins, but in different eras, which is why Manny Fernandez found himself looking up to Tim Bowens.

The 6-foot Fernandez played at 250 pounds in the 1970s and now weighs a svelte 205. The 6-foot-4 Bowens played at 325 pounds a decade ago and looks it.

Cougars cut it close, but win

PROVO — Matt Carlino discovered his shot again at the perfect time for BYU.

On Saturday night, Utah made a point of focusing its defensive game plan on shutting down Brandon Davies and Tyler Haws from the opening tip. With neither player getting many clean looks at the basket, it fell on the Cougars’ point guard to give his team an offensive jolt.
