Wildcats shake Wolverines for CIT victory

OGDEN -- Weber State's first postseason tourney win since March 11, 1999, didn't have quite the cachet of a 14 seed upsetting North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but the Wildcats will take it as long as they can keep playing.

Junior point guard Damian Lillard had 21 points and Scott Bamforth scored all of his 16 points in the second half as Weber State battled its way to a 72-69 victory over Utah Valley on Tuesday in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament after the Wolverines missed a 3 to tie at the buzzer.

Aggies overcome physical Warriors

LOGAN -- Coming out of the inbounds play, Hawaii's Zane Johnson promptly smacked Utah State point guard Brockeith Pane into the press row, causing a replay TV to take a fall and Pane to have a closer-than-anticipated meeting with the advisor of the Utah State University newspaper.

For guard Preston Medlin, it didn't matter. After all, his team's two-game losing streak, halted with a 77-72 win over Hawaii Thursday night, hurt a lot more than any pain inflicted by the Warriors.

"They're definitely as physical as anybody we've played this season," said Medlin, who led all scorers with 25 points on 13 of 14 shooting from the free-throw line. "We expected that all week. They are pretty tall and pretty wide."

Aggies stop bleeding in victory over UVU

LOGAN -- How long the Aggies can win more games in the ugly fashion they have been displaying remains to be seen. But Tuesday night in the Smith Spectrum, it was at least enough for USU president Stan Albrecht.

The university president spent the first half watching from the first row of the student section and mingling with the enthusiastic teenagers and twenty-somethings -- all the while passing out a slew of churros -- as the Aggies (4-4) claimed a 63-54 victory over Utah Valley (5-5) on the court.

Utah Valley University made a pitch to join the league, but was not included in the expansion.
