Beware of the air in Top of Utah

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality has called a "Choose Clean Air" day for Cache, Davis, Salt Lake and Weber counties for today.

A red air alert has been issued for today for Davis and Salt Lake counties. People who have respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. Under the red alert, the use of coal and wood-burning stoves is prohibited.

A yellow air alert has been issued for today for Cache and Weber counties, with a voluntary no-burn in effect, meaning residents are being asked to refrain from using coal and wood-burning stoves.

Top of Utah residents also are asked to drive as little as possible during red and yellow days because cars contribute significantly to the area's air pollution.

More information on actions that can be taken to reduce pollution is available on the "Choose Clean Air" Web site at www.cleanair.utah.gov.
